Five Teams Begin League Unbeaten

AROUND THE BIG WEST

altTOURNAMENT COUNTDOWN
With the start of Big West play last weekend, the Tournament is just four weeks away. CSF jumped out to an early six-point lead in league action with UC Irvine and Long Beach State knicking at its heels  with four points of their own. UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly follow with three.

FULLERTON’S FAST START
Fo the first time under coach Demian Brown, Cal State Fullerton is 2-0-0 in league. This season marks just the fifth time in program history that the Titans would go 2-0 in its first outings and the first since 2006.  That team would go on to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

FIVE UNBEATEN
After the first week of conference play, four teams remain unbeaten in league, three being the reigning Big West regular season tri-champions in Cal State Fullerton (2-0), UC Santa Barbara (1-0) and Long Beach State (1-0-1).  UC Irvine (1-0-1) and UC Davis (0-0-1) make five.

CAL POLY’S CROZIER REACHES MILESTONEalt
Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier became the first Big West coach to reach 100 conference victories lat weekend when Cal Poly defeated Hawai‘i 2-1 on home turf. Crozier is in his 21st year in the league and is 100-46-17 in the Big West and 222-148-42 overall.

TEAM OF THE MONTH
Hero College Sports News named Hawai‘i the September “Team of the Month” after getting off to its best-ever start at 7-1-1. After going 3-14-1 overall just a season ago, Hero Sports recognized UH for its dramatic turnaround.

The ’Bows look to take its first league W since 2014 this week at home. The Rainbow Wahine will host UC Riverside and UC Davis.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
UC Irvine freshman Maddie Newsom has been putting in both her time and work between the posts this season. The rookie currently leads the nation with 1311:46 minutes played. Newsom currently boasts a .791 save percentage, the fourth-best mark in league, and a 0.62 goals against average, the third best GAA in the Big West.

CSUN PULLS RANK
CSUN remains in the national conversation with the seventh-best shutout percentage in the NCAA at .0692. Goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill’s eight shutouts are thirs best in DI college soccer.
