Cross Country Off This Weekend, Prepares For Big Meets Next Weekend

Big West Cross Country Weekly Release No. 3

The Big West cross country clubs will take the weekend off as they prepare for a big meet weekend September 16-17.

• Last week saw several outstanding performances by conference teams, the majority of which were competing in their first events of the 2016 campaign.

• Cal Poly swept the UCSB Lagoon Open last weekend, its annual season-opening dual meet against rival UC Santa Barbara. Sophomore Peyton Bilo led the way for the Mustang women with a 5K-winning time of 17:17:84, more than 38 seconds faster than her time at the dual a year ago. Junior Clayton Hutchins grabbed the title on the men’s side for Cal Poly, completing the 8K in an impressive 24:30.74.

• Cal State Fullerton’s women’s team kicked off the season with a victory as it claimed the crown at the CSF-hosted Mark Covert Classic. This marked the first time since 2007 that the Titan women had claimed the title at the season-opener. Five CSF women finished in the top 15 led by the fourth-place showing of freshman Samantha Huerta in 18:12.9. The Cal State Fullerton men wrapped up the day in second place, 20 points better than their output from 2015. The squad was led by junior Jose Penaloza’s 8K winning time of 25:01.0.

• A pair of Long Beach State senior runners finished second in their respective races at the Pepperdine Invitational last weekend. Pauline Mandel had a time of 15:22.68 in the women’s 4K, while Kevin Ramirez completed the men’s 5K in a time of 15:59.03.

• UC Davis started the season with a season-opening dual against causeway rival Sacramento State, ruling the day with a sweep of both races. The young Aggies had their time to shine as freshman Julia Lemak finished second in the women’s 4K in 14:38, while sophomore Jordy Ceja claimed the top spot in the men’s 6K with a time of 18:17.

• Sophomore Camille Campos had another outstanding race for Hawai’i at the UH-hosted Big Wave Invitational. Campos set a personal best with a 5K-winning time of 17:48.90. This marks the second straight meet Campos has set a PR in the 5K.

• The season will end in the islands as Hawai’i hosts the 2016 Big West Cross Country Championships at Kahuku Golf Course on the North Shore of O’ahu. The league championship will be return to the Aloha State for the first time since 1992, while UH hosts its first conference meet since the WAC Championship of 2011.

The UC Santa Barbara men and Cal Poly women will be looking to defend their titles. The Gauchos are seeking their third consecutive crown, while the Mustangs are in search of a second straight title and fourth in the past five seasons. The men will have the first run through the Kahuku course as they run the 8K at 7:00 local time, while the women’s 6K championship race will be run 45 minutes later.
