Matadors Oust Titans In Marathon Thriller

CSUN – Cal State Fullerton WT Box Score

Avenging a loss in the regular season, No. 6 CSUN pulled off a thrilling 4-3 upset over No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton in a three and a half hour back-and-forth affair at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Thursday.  The quarterfinal victory sets up a showdown against No. 2 UC Santa Barbara in Friday's Big West Women's Tennis Championship semifinals.

In a match where neither team led by more than a point the entire way, the Matadors leaned on the strength of the bottom of their singles order to eke out the victory.

Ki Kim clawed her way to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles to clinch the match for CSUN against CSF's Masako Makiba.  Setting up those heroics was Mari Taslagyan at No. 6, with the Matador junior gutting out a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win against Danielle Pham to tie the match at three apiece.  Trailing Pham 4-3 in the third set, Taslagyan reeled off three straight games to end the match.

After the two teams split at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, CSUN's No. 2 duo of Vivian Lin and Skyla Alcon outlasted their Titan counterparts, Makiba and Karla Portalatin to win what would end up being a crucial doubles point.  Lin and Alcon fought to a 7-6 (9) tiebreak victory.

Camille DeLeon tied the match at 1-1, defeating Kristen Poei 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4, but Alcon responded with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Portalatin at No. 3 to give the edge back to the Matadors.

Alexis Valenzuela then stepped up for the Titans and took a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mickey Hsu at No. 1 to equalize the match again at 2-2.  Giving the Titans their first lead, Sarah Nuno grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Lin at No. 2 for a 3-2 advantage.

But Taslagyan withstood Pham's quest to finish off the match and the Matadors moved onto the semifinals for the second year in a row.  CSUN takes a 10-12 record into Friday's match with UCSB.
