Big West Tennis Release No. 12

Cal State Fullerton won a program record 16th match and remained undefeated in Big West play at 5-0, with home matches against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara on tap this week.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Cal State Fullerton Continues Historic Season Accomplishments
Cal State Fullerton, under third-year head coach Dianne Matias, set the program record for wins in a season with last Saturday’s 6-1 victory over UC Irvine.  The Titans won their 16th match and improved to 5-0 in Big West play.  In addition to snapping a 20-match losing streak to UCI which dated back to 1998, the Titans also tied a program mark with their fifth conference victory.  The 1990 squad a

Having finished no higher than a tie for fifth (2013) since the Big West instituted round-robin scheduling in 2006, the Titans are in position to win the conference regular season championship this year.  CSF is currently a half a match behind Long Beach State (6-0) in the standings, with an April 15 matchup looming between the two conference leaders.

However, the Titans need to take care of business at home this week as Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara visit the Titan Tennis Courts.  The Gauchos sit in third place (4-1), with their only loss coming to LBSU in a tight 4-3 affair.

UC Davis Men Extend Home Streak
The UC Davis men’s tennis team posted a 7-0 victory against UC Riverside last Saturday to improve to 15-3 overall and 2-0 in Big West play.  The Aggies lengthened their home winning streak at the Marya Welch Tennis Center to 18 consecutive contests dating back to the spring of 2014.  Moreover, the Aggies inched closer to tying their Division I era record of 16 victories set last season.  UC Davis is dormant this week, but returns to action next week with three huge road matches against No. 19 California, No. 47 UC Santa Barbara and No. 73 Cal Poly.  The latter two matches against the Gauchos and Mustangs have Big West regular season title implications as both opponents are also unbeaten in league play entering this week.  Cal Poly travels to UC Riverside and UC Irvine this week, while UCSB also takes a road trip to UCR.

Long Beach State’s Conference Win Streak Remains Intact
Long Beach State has won 26 straight regular season matches against Big West competition heading into Thursday’s road contest against UC Riverside.  The Beach has not lost to a conference opponent in over three years.  Locked in a 3-3 battle at UCSB last week, Beach No. 1 singles player Maeva Razakasoa fought off a 5-2 third set deficit and won the final five games to give her team a dramatic 4-3 win over then then-No. 65 ranked Gauchos.  LBSU is attempting to finish Big West play undefeated for the eighth time in the last 11 seasons.  The only roadblocks to that achievement is Thursday’s match at UCR and the April 15 showdown against Cal State Fullerton.

Men’s Squads On Solid Streaks
Several men’s teams are playing excellent tennis heading into the home stretch of the season.  Cal Poly has won six of its last eight contests.  UC Davis is riding a 12-match winning streak.  UC Irvine has captured eight of its last nine matches.  UC Riverside has won eight of its last 11 outings en route to a school Division I record 12 wins.  UC Santa Barbara has reeled off 11 wins in its last 14 contests following a 1-3 start.  As a result, three squads are ranked nationally led by No. 47 UCSB and followed by No. 67 UC Davis and No. 73 Cal Poly.
