Big West Golf Release - April

LBSU Men Capture Two Team Titles, One Individual Title:
Long Beach State men’s golf program channeled the luck of the Irish in March and took home the team title in two events.  The 49ers opened the month capturing the Bob Sitton Invitational at TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas Golf Course.  LBSU completed the three-day, 54-hole tournament at 15-over-par 867 to win by a comfortable 11 shots over second-place Stephen F. Austin (+26) and 17 strokes over Central Arkansas (+32) in third.

Two weeks later Long Beach State overcame a five-shot deficit heading into Tuesday’s final round of the 35th Anteater Invitational at El Niguel Country Club to capture the team title, while senior Daniel Chian won individual medalist honors.  Chian captured his second individual medalist title this year and third overall with a one-over 217, edging fellow classmate Kevin Lee and Christopher Crawford of Drexel by two shots.

UC Davis Men Dominated Talented Field:
In a 26-team field that showcased seven highly-ranked programs, including No. 1 USC and No. 8 Stanford, it was senior Luke Vivolo and the UC Davis men’s golf team that reign supreme after posting big wins at The Goodwin on Saturday at Stanford Golf Course.  UC Davis finished off a wire-to-wire win at the prestigious tournament. The Aggies led by three strokes after Thursday’s opening round, stretched it to a dominating 10 strokes on Friday and then didn’t let up by maintaining the margin with a 2-under 278 on Saturday.

Vivolo birdied two of his final three holes to shoot 68 and break a late tie with 19th-ranked Aaron Wise of Oregon and claim a one-shot win with his 10-under 200 total. He led three Aggies that placed in the top eight. Ben Corfee fired a final-round 71 and tied for fifth at 4 under while Patrick Soli was eighth at 2 under after closing with a 69.

Championships On The Horizon:
The 2016 Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship, hosted by Hawai’i, takes place later this month at The Bay Course in Lahaina, Maui.  The three-day event begins on Sunday, April 17 and ends on Tuesday, April 19.  Two weeks later the men’s team gear up for the Big West Golf Championship at the Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley  May 2-4.

Leading The Way:
Long Beach State’s Kassidy Teare continues to pace the Big West Conference with a 72.1 stroke average.  She is followed by Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg, who has carded a 72.4 stroke average over seven events this year.  Rounding out the top three is Hawai’i’s Eimi Koga and her 73.1 mark.  All three ladies have captured an individual medalist honor this year.

On the men’s side, Long Beach State owns the top spot in the league with Daniel Chian blasting an impressive 71.1 average.  UC Davis’ Ben Corfree and Hawai’i’s Skye Inakoshi are knotted in second after carding a cumulative stroke average of 72.0.  Not far behind are Cal Poly’s Justin De Los Santos and UC Santa Barbara’s Brandon Bauman, who each have registered a 72.2 mark.
