UC Riverside Ties Division I Era Record For Wins

Big West Tennis Release No. 10

The UC Riverside men's tennis team has totaled as many victories this season as in the past three seasons combined, and has won seven of its last nine contests.

UC Riverside Men Tie Division I Record For Wins
With wins in five of its last six and seven of its last nine contests, the UC Riverside men’s tennis team is now 9-9 on the season, and has tied for the second-highest number of wins in Division I program history.  The 2006 squad posted a 9-12 record in UCR’s first season of Division I competition and Big West membership, and is one off the record of 10 victories established in 2007.

In addition, the Highlanders have recorded as many wins this season as they did in the last three years combined.  UCR still has a minimum of eight matches left in the season with which to improve that number.

UC Davis Men Extend Win Streak To 10
The UC Davis men defeated Eastern Washington, Nevada and Portland to claim the title of the inaugural Golden State Invitational on Sunday.  The Aggies lengthened their winning streak to 10 straight, and have not lost a match since Jan. 30 to Abilene Christian.

The Aggies continue to build on a Division I program record for consecutive victories, but are now on hiatus to take spring exams.  They return to action on Mar. 26 at Nevada.  UC Davis is nearing the school record for wins at the Division 1 level (16), a mark which was set last season.  Junior Bryce McKelvie has helped engineer the streak with a personal winning streak of 14 straight matches.

UC Davis is one of four Big West men’s squads to be ranked in the Oracle/ITA top-75, currently sitting at No. 63.  UC Santa Barbara (No. 50), UC Irvine (No. 72) and Cal Poly (No. 73) give the Big West a strong presence nationally.

Women Battle To Get Back Into Rankings
With as many as six teams ranked in the Oracle/ITA top-75 at various points throughout the spring, it is surprising that the Big West currently has no one in the national poll as of the March 15 rankings.  Opportunities abound for some big wins this week amongst a sparse schedule affected by the presence of finals.

No. 44 Dartmouth visits UC Irvine and Long Beach State, while No. 24 Fresno State invades UC Santa Barbara as the Big West attempts to down ranked competition.  The Beach lost two tough matchups to No. 17 Pepperdine and No. 31 North Carolina State last week, amidst a season-long 10-match homestand.  Fresno State was the former landing spot for current UCSB head coach Simon Thibodeau.

Doubles Teams Extraordinaires
Two UC Santa Barbara duos are ranked in the top 25 of the ITA doubles poll.  The women’s doubles tandem of Palina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic are No. 19, while men’s counterparts Nathan Eshmade and Miles Seemann are No. 23.  In addition, LBSU’s pairing of Laura Eales and Hayley Thompson are ranked No. 48.  The Cal Poly duo of Corey Pang and Ben Donovan are No. 68 in the men’s doubles rankings.
