Eight Big West Tennis Squads Ranked To Start 2016 Season

Four men's and four women's squads are ranked in the initial 2016 Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-75 rankings as the season begins in earnest this week.

Big West Tennis Season Comes Into Focus
The 2016 Big West tennis season is upon us, and the nine women’s and six men’s squads are taking on top competition from the outset. The UC Santa Barbara women are facing three ranked squads in No. 2 USC, No. 51 Utah and No. 35 Oklahoma right out of the gate. The Hawai‘i women, who nearly upset No. 11 Baylor in their season opener, host three more ranked foes in No. 56 Washington, No. 72 San Jose State and No. 64 Arizona. Here is a complete list of upcoming matchups against teams selected in the initial 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) top-75 rankings:

Ranked Big West Squads Populate ITA Rankings
Both Big West men’s and women’s squads received national recognition from the pollsters when the Jan. 5 Oracle/ITA Division 1 rankings were released. Four women’s teams landed in the top-75, led by eight-time Big West regular season champion Long Beach State, which checked in at No. 40. No. 59 UC Santa Barbara, No. 70 UC Irvine and No. 75 CSUN also are on the national radar.
The men matched the women with four nationally ranked squads of their own. Cal Poly led the way with a No. 52 national ranking, followed by No. 54 UC Santa Barbara, No. 57 UC Davis and No. 68 UC Irvine.
Individuals Earn National Rankings Too
A trio of men’s tennis players are perched in the ITA singles rankings to begin the 2016 season. UC Davis junior Alec Adamson became the ranked singles player in the program’s Division I history, opening the spring at No. 38. Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of UC Santa Barbara is No. 81 while UC Irvine’s Sebastian Heim is No. 119. In women’s doubles, the UCSB tandem of Palina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic are tabbed No. 21 nationally.
Lucky No. 13 At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 13th consecutive year. One of the premier facilities in the United States, also a host of the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 27-30.
