Junior Jewelyn Sawyer (Paramount, Calif./Gahr HS) shot nearly 85 percent from the field in a pair of Long Beach State victories, leading to her selection as Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
A 6-0 guard, Sawyer connected on 11 of her 13 floor shots to help the Beach collect a road win against Pacific and defeat Pac-12 opponent Colorado at home. Sawyer led LBSU in scoring in both games while averaging 14.0 points per game.
In the 68-60 triumph against the Tigers, Sawyer pumped in 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting. She added seven rebounds and three assists against a Pacific program that has made four straight postseason appearances.
Sawyer was instrumental in LBSU’s 59-42 demolition of the Buffaloes. She notched a game-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds while tacking on a pair of steals.
Long Beach State has won four straight games and is now 7-1 on the season.
