TOURNAMENT TIDBITS

• UC Santa Barbara’s game at Clemson on Sunday marks the 11th time in the last 13 years that at least one school has represented the Big West in the Sweet 16.

• The all-time record of Big West schools in Sweet 16 matches is 2-8-0.  The 2004 and 2006 UC Santa Barbara squads advanced out of the round of 16, both times winning on the road.  UCSB defeated UNC Greensboro (1-0 in OT) in 2004 and Old Dominion (2-1) in 2006.  The Gauchos advanced to the national championship match both years, hoisting the crown in 2006.  This is UCSB’s seventh trip to the Sweet 16.  The program is 2-4 all-time in Sweet 16 matches.

• UC Santa Barbara, as a No. 15 seed, is a national seed for the seventh time.  The Gauchos also earned national seeds in 2003 (11), 2004 (9), 2007 (12), 2008 (15), 2011 (15) and 2013 (10).

• UCSB is 4-7-0 all-time in NCAA Tournament road matches.  The Gauchos own a collective NCAA Tournament record of 18-9-2, leading all Big West schools in overall win percentage (.655) and total victories.

• With Sunday’s 1-0 win over South Carolina in the second round, the Gauchos improved to 4-4-2 in all-time NCAA Tournament overtime contests.

MORE UCSB NOTES

Sweet 16 Bound: In its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance, UC Santa Barbara picked up its 18th postseason victory thanks to Sunday’s 1-0 overtime nailbiter over South Carolina.  The Gauchos improved to 18-9-2 all-time in NCAA matches, including 7-5 in the second round.  UCSB is in the Sweet 16 for the seventh time in school history.

In The Nick Of Time: UCSB’s defense has tightened up at just the right time, having allowed just two goals in the last five contests.  The Gauchos, noted for being one of the top offensive clubs in the country, have won their last three games via 1-0 shutouts.

About That Offense: UCSB is ranked No. 18 nationally in goals scored (40), led by junior Nick DePuy, whose 15 goals is the second-highest total in the country.  However, DePuy has gone four straight games without a goal.

Acheampong Assist Man:
Geoffrey Acheampong, the Big West Freshman of the Year, will be the first Gaucho to lead the league in assists since Luis Silva and Dom Sarle had 10 in 2011.  Acheampong has 10 helpers this season.
