Big West Golf Release - September
The UC Davis Aggies kick off the 2015-16 season for the men’s teams as they gear up for the Saint Mary’s Invitational at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in gorgeous Pebble Beach. The three-day event begins on Sept. 14 and concludes on Sept. 16. The following week the Aggies are back at in, only this time they are in Cle Elum, Wash., for the Husky Invitational (9/21-22).
On the women’s side, seven of the eight Big West teams open the year next week. Long Beach State and UC Irvine travel to Colorado for the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins. The Titans of Cal State Fullerton and the UC Davis Aggies begin play at the annual Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. The final trio of schools - Cal Poly, CSUN and Hawai’i - are slated to compete in the Hobble Creek Classic in St. George, Utah.
UC Riverside is the lone Big West school not competing in a tournament on Sept. 14 & 15. The Highlanders’ first event of the 2015-16 season is scheduled for Sept. 26-27 when they join Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN and UC Irvine for the Wyoming Cowgirl Dessert Classic in Palm Desert, Calif.
Six of the nine Big West men’s golf teams are not scheduled to begin the 2015-16 season until October. While Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Davis embark on the new year in September, the remaining six schools must wait until its officially Fall to hit the links.
Cal Poly Hires Women’s Golf Coach:
Sofie Aagaard, an assistant coach for the women’s golf program at Cal the last three seasons, was named head coach of the Cal Poly women’s golf team during the offseason. Aagaard, a volunteer assistant coach of the women’s golf team at Cal Poly during the fall of 2012, assumes full coaching responsibilities handled previously by Scott Cartwright. Cartwright was head coach of both the Mustang men’s and women’s programs for the last 12 years and remains at the helm of the men’s program.
