Nguyen To Appear At NCAA Singles Championship For Second Time

Hawai‘i sophomore Cindy Nguyen, the 2015 Big West Player of the Year, will make her second straight appearance in the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship, which takes place May 20-25 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.

NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Selections

Nguyen became the first Rainbow Wahine in school history to be chosen for the national singles tournament as a freshman in 2014.  She fell in a tight first round matchup against No. 12 Breaunna Addison of Texas, 7-5, 6-2, as she finished her rookie season with a 22-5 overall record.

Returning to the courts in 2015, Nguyen solidified her standing as a marquee player in the Big West.  She is the conference’s only nationally ranked singles player at No. 95 overall, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA draw by virtue of being the highest-ranked conference player in the ITA top-125 poll.

Nguyen, a Long Beach, Calif. native, finished 15-3 in dual matches exclusively at No. 1 singles.  She rides a seven-match unbeaten streak into her opening contest of the 64-player singles bracket.  Nguyen did not lose a match against Big West opposition, and her premier victory of the 2015 season came against then-21st ranked Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan, 7-6, 4-6, 8-6.  Nguyen collected three Big West Athlete of the Week awards during the 2015 campaign and her five career citations already places her among the all-time top 10.

Nguyen was ranked as high as No. 68 in the country by the ITA on March 10.

Nguyen gives the Big West a representative in the singles championship for the fourth straight year, and eighth time in the last 10 years.
