UC Irvine Returns To Men’s Tennis Finals

UC Irvine - Cal Poly MT Box Score

For the first time since 2011, UC Irvine will compete for a Big West Tournament title after defeating No. 4 seed Cal Poly in a men’s semifinal match Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The top-seeded Anteaters earned a 4-1 victory to advance to the program’s eighth final.  They attempt to win their fourth championship when they grapple with No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

UCI used the momentum of a strong start in doubles to pull through in singles.  The Anteaters won 6-1 and 6-3 at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, to corral the doubles point.

In singles, Cal Poly tied the match at 1-1 as Axel Damiens grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 against Jonathan Poon.  But that would be all the scoring the Mustangs would produce.  Sebastian Heim helped UCI retake the lead with his dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory against Ben Donovan at No. 1.

The next two points came via struggle, but the Anteaters emerged on top.  Jonathan Hammel posted a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory at No. 5 against Lucas Lesoeur to give UCI a 3-1 advantage.  After dropping the first set, Shuhei Shibahara clinched the match at No. 4, handing Naveen Beasley a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat.

UCI became the conference’s first 20-match winner since the Big West instituted round robin scheduling in 2006.  The 20-12 Anteaters will face UCSB in the finals for the first time since 2009.

Cal Poly, last year’s tournament champion, fell to 15-10 on the year.

UC Santa Barbara To Revisit Finals For Third Time In Four Years

UC Davis - UC Santa Barbara MT Box Score

Securing its third trip in four years to the finals of the Big West Men’s Tennis Championship, third-seeded UC Santa Barbara outlasted No. 2 seed UC Davis at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.

The Gauchos earned a hard fought 4-1 semifinal win over the Aggies, who closed out their historic season at 16-5 overall.  UC Davis set a school record for Division I victories and won a share of their first regular season Big West championship among several accomplishments.

UCSB will be seeking an accomplishment as well, that being its ninth Big West Tournament title.  The Gauchos hoisted their last crown in 2013.

The Gauchos (14-9) started out well in doubles play, earning victories at No. 1 and No. 3.  Morgan Mays and Andrew Riminton eked out a 6-4 win at No. 3 against Tommy Lam and James Wade to clinch the doubles point.

A competitive singles exchange ensued, with the Gauchos getting the best of it and taking a 3-0 lead thanks to victories at No. 1 and No. 6 from Tobias Galskov and Teague Hamilton.  But the Aggies fought back at No. 4 with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph by Bryce McKelvie against UCSB’s Cody Rakela to get on the score board.

However, UCSB thwarted any further attempt at a comeback as Erik Johnsson notched a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 against Everett Maltby.
