UC Irvine Advances To Semifinals

UC Irvine - Cal State Fullerton WT Box Score

No. 2 seed UC Irvine defeated No. 7 seed Cal State Fullerton, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big West Women’s Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.

The Anteaters faced some resistance from the Titans but ultimately prevailed in doubles and singles.  UCI collected the doubles point after a back-and-forth affair.  Ali Facey and Kat Facey blanked the Titan tandem of Megan Sandford and Camille DeLeon, 8-0, at No. 1, but CSF responded at No. 2 as Danielle Pham and Alexis Valenzuela defeated Sarah Gong and Mazy Watrous, 8-3.  That put the spotlight on the No. 3 court, where UCI’s Andrea Duva and Arisha Ladhani claimed the doubles point in a 8-5 win against Emilia Borkowski and Kalika Slevcove.

UCI extended its lead to 3-0 with decisive victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles.  Duva rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win versus Michelle Erasmus and Gong followed with a, 6-1, 6-0 triumph against DeLeon. Watrous nailed down the match at No. 5 in a 6-4, 6-0 decision of Borkowski.

CSF (10-12) had won the first set at both No. 1 and No. 3 when the match ended.

The Anteaters (15-8) advance to the tournament semifinals for the 14th straight year.  They meet No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara found success at the bottom of its singles lineup and held off a game UC Davis squad to win, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big West Women’s Tennis Championship Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Gauchos (15-8) also clinched the coveted doubles point to gain the early 1-0 advantage.  After winning in the No. 2 draw, UCSB’s Stacy Yam and Jaimee Gilbertson downed Frederique Sleiffer and Kamila Kecki at No. 3, 8-5.

The first four matches on the singles ladder extended to three sets, but UCSB used a pair of powerful performances from its No. 5 and No. 6 players to take a 3-0 lead.  Luisa Ortiz Candido breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6 against Kecki, while Yam prevailed 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 against Sleiffer.

UCSB concluded the match at No. 2, as Gilbertson finished off one of the three-set battles with her 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 victory against Layla Sanders.

CSUN Survives Marathon Five-Hour Match Against Hawai‘i

CSUN - Hawai‘i WT Box Score

CSUN junior Jessica Warren polished off a grueling five-hour battle against No. 4 seed Hawai‘i with a gutsy three-set victory in No. 6 singles, giving the Matadors the final spot in the semifinals of the Big West Women’s Tennis Championship.

Warren’s 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5 victory against the Rainbow Wahine’s Rebecca Faltusz ensured CSUN’s 4-3 triumph, which sets up a date with top-seeded Long Beach State on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.  It was the lone three-set match in singles.

CSUN earned the crucial doubles point to open the match, and that didn’t come easy either.  UH’s Cindy Nguyen teamed with Faltusz to defeat CSUN’s Vivian Lin and Ki Kim at No. 2, 8-4.  But the Matadors twice staved off the Rainbow Wahine in tiebreaker fashion at the No. 1 and No. 3 draws.  Criss Rodriguez and Warren clinched the point for CSUN at No. 3, topping Viktoria Malova and Sarah Gealer, 8-7 (4).

UH shook off any ill effects from losing the tight doubles point battle and came out on fire in singles.  Nguyen dispatched Mickey Hsu at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1, and Malova followed shortly thereafter with an identical result against Lin to give UH a 2-1 lead.

CSUN evened the match at 2-2 when Poei breezed to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Gealer at No. 5, and the Matadors retook the lead with Rodriguez at No. 3.  She knocked of Martina Kostalova by a 6-1, 7-5 score.  Undeterred, UH responded right back with a victory at No. 4, Paulina Petriskova rolling to a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Kim, and setting up the showdown at No. 6.

The Matadors improve to 15-5 on the year, representing the program’s highest win total since 2011.  UH finishes the year 10-10 overall.
