Cal Poly - UC Riverside MT Box Score

No. 4 seed Cal Poly collected a 4-0 victory over No. 5 seed UC Riverside in the first round of the 2015 Big West Men’s Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Thursday.

The Mustangs won by identical 6-2 scores at two positions to snatch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.  Axel Damiens and Lucas Lesoeur finished first, toppling Luis Gastao and Sean Robles at No. 3.  Ben Donovan and Corey Pang followed soon thereafter with their victory against Cooper Bridge and Michael Carella.

In singles play, Cal Poly tallied quick wins at the No. 4 and No. 1 positions with Naveen Beasley defeating Carella (6-0, 6-1) and Donovan downing Julian Ruffin (6-0, 6-0), respectively.  Pang put the final touches on the win with his 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 over Bridge.

The Highlanders won the first set at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 draws, and the battle between Lesoeur and Sina Sharifi at No. 5 had entered a third set when the match was discontinued because Cal Poly had earned the requisite four points.

Cal Poly advanced to Friday’s semifinals against top-seeded UC Irvine.  The Mustangs (15-9), ranked No. 54 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, takes on the 73rd-ranked Anteaters at 3:00 p.m.

UC Santa Barbara Wins First Round Match Against Hawai‘i

UC Santa Barbara - Hawai‘i MT Box Score

No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara outlasted No. 6 seed Hawai‘i, 4-0, in a Big West Men’s Tennis Championship first round match at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Thursday.

The Gauchos (13-9) advance to Friday’s semifinals to face No. 2 seed UC Davis at 3:00 p.m.  UCSB has won its opening match in the tournament for 15 consecutive years.

The Gauchos engaged in a competitive battle with the Rainbow Warriors for the victory.  UCSB was tested in doubles.  The two clubs split at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions before UCSB’s No. 1 tandem of Nathan Eshmade and Erik Johnsson knocked off UH counterparts Marcel Chan and Carter Lam, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.

UH (6-14) led in the third set at two positions and split sets in another, but UCSB proved to be too strong at the bottom half of the lineup.

Teague Hamilton won for the eighth time in his last nine singles matches, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Joakim Pinola at No. 6.  Cody Rakela improved to 8-2 at No. 4 singles as he dispatched Felix Albert, 6-3, 6-4 to put the Gauchos up 3-0 in the match.

The match clincher came at No. 5 where Johnsson mirrored Rakela’s result and earned the victory against Chan.

UCSB now seeks to avenge a earlier 4-3 loss to UC Davis and advance to the tournament finals for the third time in the last four years.
