Defending Champion UC Davis Leads Championship After Day One

Five-time defending champion UC Davis fired even-par 288 in the first round of the 2015 Big West Women’s Golf Championship at the El Macero Country Club to lead the eight-team field.  Hawai’i sits second after carding 290 and is followed by Cal Poly with a 293 point total.

The Highlanders of UC Riverside finished day one fourth after shooting 299 and Long Beach State is fifth with 304.  CSUN holds the sixth spot with a score of 307 while Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine are knotted in seventh following a first round score of 313.

UC Davis’ Blair Lewis finds herself as the individual leader after blasting a four-under 68 in first-round action.  With a two-under 70, Rainbow Wahine Nichole Cruz owns the second slot while UC Riverside’s Savannah Vilaubi, Cal Poly’s Sophie Bergland and UC Davis’ Andrea Wong are tied for third with a score of 71.  In all, UC Davis, Hawai’i and Cal Poly each had three players place in the top 10 after the first round of play.

Round two of the three-day event tees off at 9:00 a.m. with Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.  Live scoring can be found at and admission to the event is free.

The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I women’s regionals which are held at four sites this year from May 7-9. This year’s regional sites include Loonie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.; Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.; Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas; Entrada at Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah. The six-day NCAA Women’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 22-27 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
