Golf Enters Final Month Of Play

UCD, UCSB Gear Up For Home Events: The UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara men are closing out the spring season hosting events. The Aggies host the El Macero Classic at the El Macero Country Club, also the location of the Big West Women’s Golf Championship, April 10-12 and will be joined by Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento State, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Marquette, Nevada and Utah. The nine-team field will play on the par 72, 6,912-yard course beginning Friday at 7:20 a.m.
The Gauchos entertain Big West members CSUN, Long Beach State and UC Riverside at their annual OGIO UCSB Invitational held at the Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara, Calif., April 13-14. Along with the quartet of conference members, Boise State, CSU Bakersfield, Northern Colorado and Utah comprise the eight-team field. The teams play 36 holes on Monday, April 14 with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes are on Tuesday, April 15 with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. on holes one and 10 on the 7,068-yard, par 72 course.
Highlanders Host Final Event: UC Riverside is the lone women’s golf program hosting an event in April with the Battle at the Rock tournament scheduled for April 6-7 at the Oak Quarry Golf Club. Joining the Highlanders at the two-day event are Cal Poly, Texas Southern, UT Pan American, CSU San Marcos, North Dakota and CSU Bakersfield. Both days tee of at 7:00 a.m. with 36 holes being played on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
Aggie Women Say Aloha To Victory: Andrea Wong won her second tournament of the season while teammate Paige Lee finished a strong second at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at The Bay Course. The duo’s success led the UC Davis women’s golf team to capture its first team title of the season, beating out six ranked teams in the process. The Aggies were the only team to complete the 54-hole tournament on Maui under par, posting a 1-under 863 while finishing eight shots in front of No. 50 Texas.
Fernandez Runs Away With Victory: Senior Pete Fernandez led the UC Irvine men’s golf team to its first tournament title since 2013 at last month’s Del Walker Intercollegiate, carding an 8-under total of 202 for three rounds, which included a 63 in the opening round. His six-shot lead over teammate Bryan Shin and Long Beach State’s Daniel Chian set a school record for largest margin of victory.
National Recognition UC Davis Women: The UC Davis women’s golf program is sitting just outside the Golfweek’s/Sagarin Ratings, released on April 1, with a 26th ranking. Paige Lee and Andrea Wong pace the Aggies, who have recorded five top 3 performances, and the Big West Conference with stroke averages of 72.28 and 72.29.
Championships On The Horizon: The 2015 Big West Conference Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships take place later this month with the women’s championship, hosted by UC Davis, slated for April 19-21 at the El Macero Country Club (par 72, yardage 6,101) and the men’s event set for April 26-28 at Cal Poly’s home course - the San Luis Obispo Country Club (par 70, yardage 6,677).
