Track and Field Release No. 2

Three squads are sending contingents to the prestigious Texas Relays, while Cal Poly and UC Riverside host meets this weekend as the track and field season continues.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Long Beach State, UC Davis & UC Irvine Head To Texas Relays: Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Irvine is sending small contingents of competitors to the prestigious Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas in Austin.  A two-time Big West champion in the 1,500m, Aggie senior Raquel Lambdin will compete in her signature event.  Lloyd Sicard, the 2014 Big West Men’s Freshman of the Year, already has advanced to the finals of the 110m hurdles after qualifying with a time of 14.12 on Friday.  UC Davis also brought the majority of its competitors to participate in another Texas-based meet, the Texas State Bobcat Invitational.

UC Riverside Hosts Spring Track Classic: The UC Riverside Track and Field program is hosting its Spring Track Classic, March 26-28, with nine other universities, including Big West brethren Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.  In addition, Cornell, North Dakota State, Southern Utah and Oregon State are taking part in the three-day festivities.  The Highlanders have had a strong start to the 2015 season with three different athletes combining for four Big West Athlete of the Week awards.  Senior Raquel Hefllin has earned back-to-back Track Athlete of the Week citations.  Breana Jemison and Danielle Littleton also have snatched honors.

Former All-Americans Return To Cal Poly:
Cal Poly will host the 33rd annual Cal Poly/Share SLO Invitational on Saturday, featuring past and present Mustang stars.  Former Cal Poly All-Americans Stephanie Brown Trafton, Maggie Vessey, Jasmine Pickett and John Prader are scheduled to compete.  Brown Trafton, a three-time Olympian discus thrower, is entered in the competition.  She won the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics (America’s first in the event since 1932) with a mark of 212 feet, 5 inches.  Vessey, the NCAA Championships runner-up in the 800-meter run in 2005, posted the No. 6 time in the world (1:57.84) during the 2009 season.  Collegiate teams on hand include Pepperdine, CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly Pomona and Allan Hancock College.

Porlier Langlois Leads Hawai‘i At SDSU Spring Break Invitational: Hawai‘i, one week removed from a successful showing at the USC Trojan Invitational, returns to the mainland for another go as it competes in the San Diego State Spring Break Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  Senior Alex Porlier Langlois broke the school record in the shot put last weekend in Los Angeles with a heave of 52-07.5 (16.04m).  The throw erased a record that had stood for seven years, owned by Meghan Waver, who threw 51-07.25 (15.73m) in 2008).  Porlier Langlois also posted personal bests in the hammer and shot put last week.

Nixon Breaks Meet Record At Hornet Invite: UC Davis senior Cekarri Nixon finished spring exams and immediately went to work at the Hornet Invite at Sacramento State last weekend.  The sprinter posted a meet record time of 54.31 in the 400-meters.  Her time currently ranks No. 1 in the Big West, No. 7 in the West Region and No. 15 in the nation.  Nixon’s time eclipsed the previous meet record of 54.61 set by Ugo Eke (unattached) in 2014.

Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Riverside: UC Riverside will host the Big West Track and Field Championships for the first time in school history.  The UCR Track Stadium will be home to the multi-events portion of the meet (May 8-9) and the full portion (May 15-16).
