BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Men’s Tennis Schedule Features Ranked Opponents

It’s a light schedule for men’s tennis this week, but the competition is fierce with four of the eight matches on tap taking place against ranked teams.  Cal Poly, the lone remaining unbeaten men’s squad, takes its 2-0 record down south to face San Diego State and No. 41 San Diego.  Hawai‘i embarks on its first roadtrip of the year, also meets the ranked Toreros after a stop in the Pacific Northwest to tangle with Seattle and No. 62 Washington.  The slate also is highlighted by UC Davis clashing with its third ranked foe in the young season, as the Aggies take the short jaunt to No. 52 Santa Clara.

Three Women’s Teams Ranked In ITA Top 75

The Big West women are represented strongly in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association top 75 rankings.  Long Beach State leads the charge at No. 40, followed by Hawai‘i at No. 56 and UC Irvine at No. 73.  The 49ers begin the spring dual season with three straight road matches, beginning with a Big West contest at Cal State Fullerton on Friday.  They conclude the trip against San Diego State and Loyola Marymount.  The Rainbow Wahine opened up the season with three straight challenges against ranked opponents – and came away with one win.  UH upset then-No. 29 Kentucky in the season opener before falling to No. 25 Ole Miss and No. 43 Washington.  UH is idle until Saturday, Feb. 7 when UC Riverside visits the islands for the Big West opener.  Meanwhile, UC Irvine is 2-1 on the year and also idle this week.  The Anteaters return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at home versus Loyola Marymount.

Hilt-Costello, Edles Approach Career Milestones
A pair of distinguished head coaches are poised to reach career milestones this season.  Long Beach State’s Jenny Hilt-Costello, in her 17th season, owns a career mark of 292-130 (.692), and needs just eight wins to secure No. 300.  Entering his 19th season at the helm of UC Irvine, Mike Edles is now 246-169 (.593) and four wins shy of career victory No. 250.  The two mentors have combined to capture at least a share of, or the outright regular season, in all nine years that the Big West has instituted a round-robin schedule.  LBSU also has won 10 of the last 11 Big West Tournament titles, with UCI capturing the other in 2010.

Youth Is Served
In the first two weeks of the tennis season, the future of the Big West has been on prime display as two freshmen and three sophomores have earned Athlete of the Week honors.

A Dozen Years At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 12th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States, also a host of the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 23-26.
