Cal Poly junior David Nwaba (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica College) earned his first Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor after helping his team to a 2-1 record.
Nwaba led the Mustangs in points (57) and points per game (19.0) while shooting a team-best 60.0 (24-for-40) percent from the floor in notching victories over San Francisco and Northeastern and a competitive loss against No. 8 Gonzaga.
The wing had 19 points and six rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting in the win at San Francisco. He helped spearhead a comeback from a 14-point halftime deficit with 17 points against Northeastern in a 60-58 victory over the preseason favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association.
Nwaba poured in a game-high 21 points against No. 8 Gonzaga to keep the Mustangs within a single-digit deficit for most of the game in an eventual 63-50 loss. He hit on 10-of-16 floor attempts for the game.
He shot higher than 53 percent in all three games.
