Earning her second straight Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award, Long Beach State junior Devin Hudson (Ontario, Calif./Colony HS) played a huge role in a one-point upset win over nationally ranked Cal.
The 6-3 center scored 14 points and added 12 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot as the 49ers knocked off the No. 18/17-ranked Bears in overtime. Hudson delivered the game-winning bucket with 2.8 seconds left in OT as her sixth offensive board of the evening resulted in a put back.
The win was the first over a ranked opponent for the 49er program since downing No. 21 USC in 2005-06.
Hudson’s 14 points tied for the team lead, and her 12 boards was a team-best as she secured her third double-double of the season and 15th of her career. She also had an efficient shooting night, making 7-of-11 from the field.
The 49ers have now won six straight games and have improved to 8-1 on the season, marking their best start since 1986-87.
Others nominated: Ariana Elegado (Cal Poly); Hailey King (Cal State Fullerton); Ashlee Guay (CSUN); Brittany Crain (UC Riverside); Shawna-Lei Kuehu (Hawai‘i)
