Tournament Title For UC Riverside Women:
Lead by Brittani Ferraro, who captured individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 221, the UC Riverside women’s golf team won the Santa Clara Colby Invitational. The Highlanders led after the first day of competition and shot a 313 in the final round to win the eight-team tournament by a total three-round score of 927. The Highlanders beat out the host Broncos (936) who finished second, while Cal Poly placed third at 937. This marks the first win for the Highlanders since October 8, 2013, when they claimed the Birdies for Breast Cancer Tournament.
Bostrom Wins First Event:
CSUN’s Rebecca Bostrom won her first collegiate tournament as the sophomore took home individual medalist honors at the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational Sunday at Cypress Ridge Golf Club. Bostrom, who came into the final round with a one-shot lead after a one-under 72 on Saturday, equaled that number again Sunday to finish at two-under 144 and win her first title in just her second collegiate tournament. She won by two strokes over Northern Arizona’s Jacquie LeMarr who finished at even-par 146. Bostrom’s outright win is the first by a CSUN golfer this season and the first since Clariss Guce won the Fresno State Classic last March.
Mustang Women Getting Recognition:
The Cal Poly women’s golf team has an impressive group of freshmen. Head coach Scott Cartwright has used as many as four freshmen in the quartet of tournaments played this fall. Golfstat has taken notice, ranking Cal Poly’s freshmen as a group No. 8 among all NCAA Division I schools in its Freshman Class Impact Rankings this week. Oklahoma State leads with a relative strength rating of 453.978 out of a possible 1,000, followed by Illinois and Houston. No Big West school other than Cal Poly is ranked in the top 25.
UC Davis Women’s Team Eyes Top 25:
The UC Davis women’s golf team is ranked 32nd in the current Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings. They are led by junior Andrea Wong, who ranks second in the league with a 73.5 stroke average.
