Track and Field Weekly Release No. 10

The decathlon and heptathlon competitions commence the 2014 Big West Track and Field Championships at UC Davis this Friday and Saturday, with the main meet being contested the following weekend.

Multi-Events Kick Off 2014 Big West Championship at UC Davis: UC Davis hosts the Big West Track and Field Championships for the first time in school history, beginning with the multi-events portion (decathlon and heptathlon) Friday and Saturday.  The remainder of the championship will be contested May 17 and 18 at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track.

Eleven entries for the decathlon and 15 for the heptathlon will compete for the crown.  Friday’s decathlon events include the 100-meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meters, while the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meters will be contested Saturday.  In the heptathlon, the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meters will take place on Friday, with the long jump, javelin and 800-meters concluding the competition Saturday.

The majority of the 11 decathlon competitors are comprised of UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly athletes.  Devin Bennett leads a quartet of Mustangs as he owns the top mark in the Big West this season, scoring 7,069 points at the Sacramento State Mondo Mid-Major Challenge on April 10.  Bennett finished fourth in the decathlon at the 2013 championships.  Long Beach State senior Garrett Demirjian is also entered.  He was last year’s runner-up with a personal-best 7,296 points that ranked third in school history.  This is Demirjian’s first competition of 2014.  Looking to score points for their teams is Cal Poly sophomore Nick Ahrold and UC Santa Barbara sophomore Ike Okpara, who rank second and third on the Big West best marks list with 6,271 and 6,254 points, respectively.

Hawai‘i hopes to sport the heptathlon champion for the second straight year after Samantha Balentine’s victory in 2013.  The leading points-getter this season is senior Kaleigh Morrison.  She recorded the No. 1 mark of 5,186 points on April 16 at the Mt. SAC Relays.  Morrison, who placed sixth in the heptathlon in 2013, outdistanced UC Santa Barbara sophomore Tori Usgaard (4,968 points) and UC Riverside junior Danielle Littleton (4,926) at the Mt. SAC event.  Usgaard is actually the top returning performer from the 2013 conference championship meet, as she posted a fourth place finish in Northridge with 4,828 points.

Marshall, Hooper Move Into National Top-10 For Marks: UC Davis sophomore Ashley Marshall and UC Riverside senior Ted Hooper provided a preview of the explosive performances that are expected when the Big West Track and Field Championships continue next week at UC Davis.  Marshall ran the seventh-fastest time in the country Saturday during the Causeway Classic duel with a first-place 11.22 in the 100-meters.  Meanwhile, Hooper cleared a school record 25-10.25 in the long jump for the Highlanders as one of the highlights of last weekend’s adidas/Steve Scott Invitational.  Hooper’s mark ranks No. 6 on the NCAA list.

Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Davis: UC Davis will host the 2014 Big West Track and Field Championships with the multi-events on May 9-10 and will continue with the bulk of the events on May 16-17.

Recapping The 2013 Big West Championships: The Long Beach State men and the UC Davis women captured the 2013 Big West Track and Field titles on the final day of competition at Cal State Northridge’s Matador Track and Field Complex.  UC Davis pulled away from UC Santa Barbara for its second consecutive team title after dominating performances from the Aggie sprinters and distance runners to score 172.50 points.  The Aggies claimed victories in the steeplechase, 10,000 meters, 1,500 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 800 meters and 4x400 meter relay.

On the men’s side of things, the 49ers claimed their seventh team title and third in the last six years.  LBSU’s seven titles ties with former member Utah State for the third-most in Big West history.  Led by the throwers, 82.5 of the team’s 176.5 points originated with the field contingent to help bolster the 49ers over UC Santa Barbara, which finished with 152 points.  Cal Poly came in third with a 146-point total.
