UC Davis, Guce Begin Regional Play

The five-time defending Big West champion UC Davis women's golf team and Cal State Northridge's Clariss Guce begin their quest for the national title this week when they compete in the NCAA West Regional in Cle Elum, Wash., May 8-10.  The Aggies are making their fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I Championship while Guce is making her first.

The Aggies were selected as the 13th seed in the 23-team event, one of three regional tournaments scheduled for May 8-10. It will be played at Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort. The top eight teams and top two players not on an advancing team will move on to the national finals in Tulsa, Okla., on May 20-23.

The NCAA East Regional will be played in Tallahassee, Fla., while the NCAA Central Regional will take place at Stillwater, Okla.

UC Davis earned its spot in the 70-team national championship by winning its fifth straight Big West title two weeks ago in San Luis Obispo. The Aggies, who won by 16 strokes, have the second-longest championship streak in Big West history.

The Aggies are making their sixth regional appearance in seven Div. I seasons and are looking to move on to the finals for the fourth time. UC Davis tied for third in 2011 for its highest regional finish while the Aggies' best national showing was a 16th-place showing last season.

Clariss Guce of Cal State Northridge - who tied with Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton for first place at the Big West Championship - was selected as an individual.  The 2014 Big West Women's Golfer of the Year owns the conference’s second-lowest stroke average of 73.4 and placed in the Top 10 in eight of the nine tournaments she competed in this year.  The senior from Artesia, Calif., finished first in four events, including the Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship where she tied with Edberg but lost the one-hole playoff.
