IRVINE IS BIG WEST TOURNAMENT CHAMPION
After an 11-4 win in title game Sunday over No. 2 seed Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine earned its fifth Big West Tournament crown in the six years that the tournament has existed.  UCI held the Matadors scoreless in the final 16 minutes of play while the Anteaters would add another five goals.

UCI NCAA BOUND
The ’Eaters earned the automatic NCAA Tournament berth after clinching the Big West Tournament and will face No. 3 USC in the first round of play on May 9 at 1:45 pm.  The Anteaters will travel to Los Angeles as the match will be held at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.  When the two teams squared off earlier this season on Sunday, April 6 in Los Angeles, USC captured a 16-5 victory over the ’Eaters.  The Anteaters will make their third appearance in NCAA Tournament play this week.  They recorded their highest finish when they clinched a fourth place mark in 2012.  The previous year, UCI finished fifth after defeating No. 6 Indiana in the fifth place game 12-8.

CROGHAN NAMED MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

Senior attacker Hannah Croghan received MVP honors after netting four goals versus the Matadors, Sunday.  Croghan’s stellar performance throughout the tournament included a pair of goals in the semifinal match for a six-goal total over the weekend.  In the semifinal match, Croghan redirected the game’s momentum after finding the net on a breakaway to give the ’Eaters a cushion at 4-2 with 2:21 remaining in the fourth period over Long Beach State.  The senior has 44 goals on the season.

CARDEY CLAIMS NO. 1 SPOT IN RECORD BOOK

UC Irvine’s Jessy Cardey found the back of the cage two times Sunday to bring the Anteater to a total of 21 goals in tournament games, making her the category leader in Big West history.  Cardey’s performance last weekend also gave her a grand total of 218 goals in her three-year career at UCI and junior is now the all-time goal-leader in the UC Irvine record book.
