UC Irvine Hosts Steve Scott Invitational

Track and Field Weekly Release No. 9

UC Irvine hosts the 20th annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational this weekend, featuring some of the nation's top talent.

UC Irvine Hosts Annual Steve Scott Invitational: UC Irvine hosts the 20th annual adidas/steve Scott Invitational this weekend at Anteater Stadium.  Fellow Big West members Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Riverside will send contingents to compete in the meet.  The meet is named for Steve Scott, a three-time Olympian and six-time All-American in track and cross country at UCI.  He has run 136 sub-4 minute miles in his career.

Rivals Meet Again: Entered in the 800-meters at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational are two of the most decorated athletes in Big West track history, as well as former rivals in UC Irvine’s Charles Jock and UC Santa Barbara’s Ryan Martin.  Jock, who will compete for Nike, won the NCAA 800-meter title in 2012 and finished his career as a three-time All-American.  Martin, who dueled with Jock for four years in Big West races, was fourth in the 2012 NCAA final.  His prestigious career also included three All-American seasons.

In four Big West Championship meet showdowns from 2009-12, Martin won twice (2009 & 2011) and so did Jock (2010 & 2012).  Incredibly, two of those races were decided by two-tenths of a second and a third by six-tenths of a second.  The 1:44.75 that Jock ran in 2012 set a Big West championship meet and overall conference record.

Rivalry Meets On Tap: Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara face off in a head-to-head duel this Saturday in San Luis Obispo as the two teams prepare for the upcoming Big West Championships.  On Friday, UC Davis travels to Sacramento State for the Causeway Classic Dual.  The Gauchos feature one of the top middle distance runners in junior Shyan Vaziri while the Mustangs counter with two top long distance specialists in senior Chris Frias and Sean Davidson.  Vaziri ran a blazing 3:42.44 on April 18 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, setting a school record and producing the nation’s current No. 12 fastest time.  In a loaded field at the Stanford Invitational on April 4, Frias clocked 28:45.60 in the 10,000 meters to break a 31-year-old school record, surpassing the mark of 28:52.04 that Carmelo Rios had set in 1983.  That mark also currently ranks No. 9 on this year’s top NCAA performance list.  Davidson’s time of 29:11.20 at the April 17 Mt. SAC Relays ranks No. 31 nationally.

Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Davis: UC Davis will host the 2014 Big West Track and Field Championships with the multi-events on May 9-10 and will continue with the bulk of the events on May 16-17.

Recapping The 2013 Big West Championships: The Long Beach State men and the UC Davis women captured the 2013 Big West Track and Field titles on the final day of competition at Cal State Northridge’s Matador Track and Field Complex.  UC Davis pulled away from UC Santa Barbara for its second consecutive team title after dominating performances from the Aggie sprinters and distance runners to score 172.50 points.  The Aggies claimed victories in the steeplechase, 10,000 meters, 1,500 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 800 meters and 4x400 meter relay.

On the men’s side of things, the 49ers claimed their seventh team title and third in the last six years.  LBSU’s seven titles ties with former member Utah State for the third-most in Big West history.  Led by the throwers, 82.5 of the team’s 176.5 points originated with the field contingent to help bolster the 49ers over UC Santa Barbara, which finished with 152 points.  Cal Poly came in third with a 146-point total.
