Defending Champ Cal State Fullerton Leads After Day One Of Championship

Cal State Fullerton is in perfect position to defend its title from a season ago as the Titans sit atop the leaderboard after carding a 1-under 287 on the first day of the 2014 Big West Men's Golf Championship at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, Calif. 

The Aggies of UC Davis find themselves two strokes back in second place with Hawai'i rounding out the top three after posting a score of 290 (+2).  Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge are knotted in fourth place after registering a first round score of 295 (+7).  Cal Poly sits sixth with a score of 300, UC Irvine owns the seventh spot with 301 and is followed by UC Santa Barbara (303) and UC Riverside (304).

Aggie Matt Hansen leads the individual race after blasting a 5-under 67 in the first round of play on the par-72, 7,137-yard course.  The senior from Morro Bay, Calif., recorded a team-best seven birdies, which included three straight on holes 12 through 14.  One stroke back in second place is Cal State Fullerton's Mark Anguiano, who posted a score of 68.  Three birdies on the final four holes lifted Nainoa Calip to the third-lowest score of the day at 69.  He is followed by teammate Brian Lee and UC Davis' Nicolas Noya, who are tied for fourth after tallying a 2-under 70.

The second of three rounds tees of Monday, April 28 at 7:30 a.m. with Hawai'i, UC Riverside and Northridge and is followed by Cal Poly, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara at 8:20 a.m.   The final group, comprised of UC Davis, Long Beach State and UC Irvine, gets underway at 9:10 a.m.  Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.

The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I men’s regionals which are held at six sites - Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala.), Lonnie Pool Golf Course (Raleigh, N.C.), The Club at Old Hawthorne (Columbia, Mo.), Briggs Ranch Golf Club (San Antonio, Texas), Eugene Country Clun (Eugene, Ore.), Rich Harvest Farms (Sugar Grove, Ill.).  The six-day NCAA Men’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.  Selections for the regionals is slated for Monday, May 5 at 7:00 a.m. (PDT) on the Golf Channel.
