In a quarterfinal match that lasted four hours and 34 minutes, No. 3 seed Hawai‘i capped off a hard fought battle with a 4-2 win over No. 6 Cal State Northridge at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to solid doubles play from their No. 1 and No. 3 duos.  At No. 3, Martina Kostalova and Sarah Gealer sealed up the point with an 8-3 victory against Criss Rodriguez and Lorraine Cheung.

UH extended its lead to 2-0 as Cindy Nguyen downed Vivian Lin, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 draw.  The Matadors drew within one point when Mickey Hsu stormed to a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 over Xenia Suworowa.

CSUN equalized the scoreline at 2-2 as Jessica Warren won a second set tiebreaker to topple UH’s Kelsey Daguio, 6-2, 7-6 (6), at No. 6.

But the ‘Bows stopped any further CSUN momentum thanks to Kostalova from No. 3 singles.  Her 6-3, 7-5 win over Rodriguez regained the lead at 3-2 for UH.

With the final two matches on the No. 4 and No. 5 courts going to three sets, it was Gealer from her No. 5 post who clinched the match for UH.  Gealer won by a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 against Cheung to wrap up the marathon match.

UH will face No. 2 seed UC Irvine in Saturday’s semifinal action at 9:00 a.m.
