UC Davis fired a low-round score of 304 in the final day of competition for a three-round score of 895, which ultimately secured the Aggies of their fifth consecutive Big West Women's Golf Championship at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club. The Aggies' streak of five straight titles becomes the second-longest stretch of victories in the Big West after San Jose State, who owns the top spot after winning 10-straight championships from 1987-1996.
The Aggies, who grabbed the top spot on day one and never looked back, finished with a 16-stroke lead over second place Cal State Northridge, who tallied 911. Long Beach State (922) leap-frogged UC Irvine to nab third place after carding 304 in the final round, the second lowest score of the day. One stroke back in fourth with a total of 923 was UC Irvine, who was followed by host Cal Poly (931), UC Riverside (933) and Cal State Fullerton (942). Hawai'i closed out the eight-team field with a score of 953.
While UC Davis captured the team title in dominate fashion, the individual title came down to a playoff between Cal State Northridge's Clariss Guce and Cal State Fullerton's Martina Edberg, who found themselves knotted at the top with a three-round score of 217. Edberg went on to win the one-hole playoff to capture the school's first individual title and break the four-year dominance by UC Davis.
Cal State Northridge's Cesilie Hagen and UC Davis' Bev Vatananugulkit, the leader after day one, concluded the tournament tied for third after shooting 220. Savannah Vilaubi, representing UC Riverside, blasted the low-score of the day with a 3-under 70 to vault to fifth place with a three-round score of 221.
With today's victory, UC Davis advances to the NCAA Division I Women’s Regionals which are held at three sites, including the West Regional at Tumble Creek at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Washington, from May 8-10. Oklahoma State and Florida State will host the other two regionals. The four-day NCAA Women’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Pairings for the regionals, along with at-large selections, will be announced April 28 at 3:00 p.m. (PDT) on the Golf Channel.
