Cal State Northridge fired the low-round score of the day but defending champion UC Davis maintains the top spot on the leaderboard after the second of three rounds at the 2014 Big West Women's Golf Championship held at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club.
UC Davis, who has four golfers placing in the top 10, carded a second-round score of 297 for a two-day total of 591. Paced by Clariss Guce's 4-under-par 69, the Matadors blasted 296 to jump from fourth place to second with a two-round score of 603. UC Irvine follows in third place with a two-round score of 611 (305-306). Long Beach sits fourth (617) while Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton are tied for fifth with a 625 total. UC Riverside is seventh after firing 626 and Hawai'i rounds out the eight-team field, shooting 636.
With one round remaining, Guce took over first place in the individual race after blasting a 4-under 69, the low-round score of the tournament, to total 143 after the second round of play. She owns a three-stroke edge over UC Davis' Betty Chen, Cal State Fullerton's Martina Edberg and UC Davis' Bev Vatananugulkit, who are knotted in second with a two-round total of 146.
The final round of the 2014 Big West Women's Golf Championship tees off at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 15 with UC Riverside and Hawai'i. Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State are slated to start at 8:10 a.m. with UC Davis, Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine following at 9:00 a.m.
