Big West Women's Golf Release - Big West Championship

The 2014 Big West Women's Golf Championship tees off this weekend in the central coast as Cal Poly hosts the event for the fifth time in six years at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club.  The three-day event runs from Sunday, April 13 to Tuesday, April 15 and admission for the event is free.

Eight teams with five golfers on each squad will compete for the team and individual titles on the par-73 course that measures 6,196 yards with five par-5's, nine par-4's and four par-3's.

UC Davis has won four straight Big West team titles and three of the Aggies return to defend the 2013 crown.  Sophomore Andrea Wong had a stellar performance at her first Big West Championship, placing second at last year's event.  Junior Bev Vatananugulkit, who captured the 2012 individual title, followed close behind in third place while sophomore Betty Chen finished in a tie for 12th place.

Chen has the lowest average on the Aggie roster this season with a 73.2 average, including a first-place finish in the Hoosier Fall Invitational and runner-up honors in the Anuenue Spring Break Classic She has shot 69 five times this year along with a 70.

Seven of the golfers who finished in the top 10 in last year’s event return. Long Beach State, runner-up in the 2013 tournament, returns three golfers, including Chaewon Park, who placed fifth, and Shawnee Martinez, who was seventh. UC Irvine is led by Ronnie Valerio, who placed fifth a year ago.

A practice round is slated for Saturday, followed by the first round of play Sunday at 7:30 a.m.  Monday's second round of play tees off at 9:00 a.m., with the final round set for Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.  Awards will be presented following the final round approximately at 2:30 p.m. 

The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I women's regionals which are held at three sites, including the West Regional at Tumble Creek at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Washington, from May 8-10. Oklahoma State and Florida State will host the other two regionals. The four-day NCAA Women’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
