Victories in conference play led Hawai‘i senior Jonathan Brooklyn and freshman Cindy Nguyen to the sweep of the Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.

Brooklyn Defeats Nationally Ranked Foe

Senior Jonathan Brooklyn (Hillingdon, England/Langley Grammar School) defeated a nationally ranked opponent and helped Hawai‘i topple a conference foe in garnering Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.

Brooklyn was a catalyst in UH’s 6-1 win against Cal Poly, racing to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Ben Donovan at No. 1 singles.  He and partner Carter Lam clinched the doubles point for the ‘Bows with an 8-6 win against Cal Poly’s Devin Barber and Corey Pang.

He also tallied a victory against Oregon’s No. 110-ranked Robin Cambier by a score of 7-5, 6-7, 10-4.  Brooklyn and Lam also posted a 3-1 record in doubles, helping UH clinch the point in a 5-2 win over Idaho.

Nguyen Extends Singles Streak To Eight Straight

Hawai‘i freshman Cindy Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) earned Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week after extending her win streak in singles to eight straight matches.

The No. 1 player for the Rainbow Wahine, Nguyen toppled three straight opponents from Big West foes UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and UC Irvine, helping UH finish 2-1 on its road trip to the mainland.  She earned a straight set 6-1, 6-2 win against UCSB’s Kaiulani Boyer to help the ‘Bows eke out a 4-3 win over the Gauchos in rainy conditions on Monday.  Nguyen then went the distance in her next two contests, dispatching Cal Poly’s Jennifer Cornea 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 and UCI’s Sarah Gong 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.  Nguyen also split a pair of doubles matches with partner Rebecca Faltusz.
