UC Santa Barbara Men Take UC Riverside Spring Break Classic

Spring Break Success For Santa Barbara: At the Highlanders’ inaugural UC Riverside Spring Break Classic, UC Santa Barbara brought home the men’s overall team title with 117 points. With the victory in southern California, the Gaucho men have won their first four meets. The four meets include the Gaucho Round Up featuring Westmont and Pepperdine, the All-Cal Champs versus UC San Diego, UC Riverside and UC Irvine and the UC Riverside Dual meet, in which the Gaucho men recorded a 15-0 start in dual meet scoring. The Gaucho women took 6th overall in Riverside.
Records for Riverside: UC Riverside senior Caleb Stuart broke his own school record in the hammer throw for the second consecutive week with a mark of 67.24m at the Highlander’s Spring Break Classic, Friday. The senior broke his previous record by more than two feet and has also earned two Field Athlete of the Week honors this season for his efforts in the hammer throw and shot put.
CSUN And UCSB Top Finishes At UCR: In addition to the UC Santa Barbara men taking the team title at the UC Riverside Spring Break Classic, another Big West team finished atop the competition as the Cal State Northridge women finished with 154 points to claim the team title on the women’s side. Northridge bested North Dakota State, Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside, Northern Colorado, Cornell, Southern Utah, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and Wyoming (in order of finish at the Classic).
The Coast Is Calling: The Big West disperses talent across California this weekend as representatives from Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara head to San Diego for the Cal-Nevada Invitational. Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge and UC Davis will also be represented at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in San Francisco while Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara will also compete at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto Friday and Saturday.
Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Davis: UC Davis will host the 2014 Big West Track & Field Championships with the multi-events on May 9-10 and will continue with the bulk of the events on May 16-17.
Recapping the 2013 Big West Championships: The Long Beach State men and the UC Davis women captured the 2013 Big West Track & Field titles on the final day of competition at Cal State Northridge’s Matador Track & Field Complex. UC Davis pulled away from UC Santa Barbara for its second consecutive team title after dominating performances from the Aggie sprinters and distance runners to score 172.50 points. UCD claimed victories in the steeplechase, 10,000 meters, 1,500 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 800 meters and 4x400 meter relay.
On the men’s side of things, the 49ers claimed their seventh team title and third in the last six years. LBSU’s seven titles ties with former member Utah State for the third-most in Big West history. Led by throwers, 82.5 of the team’s 176.5 points originated with the field contingent to help bolster the 49ers over UC Santa Barbara who finished with 152 points. Cal Poly came in third with an 146-point total.
