Cal Poly Hammers UC Santa Barbara To Move Into Big West Semifinals
Freshman guard Ridge Shipley scored a career-high 15 points as the seventh-seeded Cal Poly men's basketball program moved into the Big West Conference Tournament semifinal round for the third successive year by annihilating Blue-Green rival and No. 2 UC Santa Barbara in a Thursday afternoon quarterfinal matchup at the Honda Center, 69-38.
Sophomores Joel Awich and David Nwaba both added 11 points for Cal Poly (11-19), which advanced to face No. 1 UC Irvine in Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal matchup. That semifinal pairing will be made available later tonight. The Big West Tournament title game, with automatic invitation to the NCAA Tournament hanging in the balance, is set for Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m.
No. 3 Long Beach State Pulls Away Late To Post Quarterfinal Win over No. 6 Cal State Fullerton
Down 43-39 with 12:50 remaining in the second half, freshman Travis Hammonds sank two straight 3-pointers to switch the momentum, and Long Beach State pulled away from Cal State Fullerton to advance to the Big West Tournament semifinals with a 66-56 win over the Titans.
Mike Caffey led the 49ers with 14 points, but Long Beach State (15-16) had great balance, with Tyler Lamb scoring 13 points, Hammonds finishing with 12, and A.J. Spencer adding 10 to compliment a strong defensive effort for LBSU.
Top-seeded UC Irvine Eases Past No. 8 UC Riverside, 63-43, To Advance To Semis
UC Irvine's solid defense was evident once again as the top-seeded Anteaters topped No. 8 seed UC Riverside, 63-43, in a Big West Conference Tournament quarterfinal game at the Honda Center Thursday night.
With the victory, UCI will face seventh-seeded Cal Poly in a semifinal game Friday night at 6:30. The Mustangs defeated No. 2 UC Santa Barbara, 69-38, earlier Thursday.
CSUN Fights Back To Score Dramatic 87-84 Overtime Victory over Hawai’i
Cal State Northridge has played a school record seven overtime games this season.
The overtime scenario happened again on Thursday night during the Big West Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at Honda Center against the University of Hawai'i.
"I told the guys 'this is our game.'" Matador head coach Reggie Theus said referring to the team's overtime experiences that eventually led to a dramatic 87-84 overtime victory over the Rainbow Warriors. "This is the kind of game we play. That is what we do. We grind it out."
