UC Santa Barbara junior Alan Williams (Phoenix, Ariz./North HS) broke one record and tied another with his sixth Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor.
The six Player of the Week awards is a Big West single-season record. Williams, who now owns eight citations for his career, tied UC Irvine all-time leading scorer Jerry Green (1999-2002) for the most in Big West career history.
Williams recorded his 14th and 15 double-doubles of the season to lead the Gauchos to their 20th and 21st wins of the 2013-14 campaign.
He scored 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds in an 86-77 victory over Hawai‘i. He added two steals and three blocked shots while hitting 6 of 12 from the field.
In a 71-55 road win against Cal Poly, Williams contributed 23 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on 9 of 14 from the floor. His five blocked shots also helped fuel UCSB’s defensive effort against the Mustangs, which shot just 9-of-40 from two-point range for the game.
Williams also shot 73.3 percent (11 of 15) from the free throw line.
Others nominated: Josh Greene (Cal State Northridge); Dan Jennings (Long Beach State); Ryan Sypkens (UC Davis); Will Davis II (UC Irvine); Christian Standhardinger (Hawai‘i)
