UC Irvine senior Kelly Meggs (Seattle, Wash./Bellevue HS) captured Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors as she averaged 20.0 points and shot better than 70 percent in a pair of victories.
The 5-7 guard hit 13 of 18 floor shots for a .722 field goal percentage as the Anteaters toppled Cal State Fullerton (78-72) and UC Davis (68-55). Meggs also sizzled from three-point range, shooting 73.3 percent (11 of 15) overall.
Against the Titans, Meggs scored 18 points on a career-best six three-pointers to help UCI to the six-point win.
Meggs returned two nights later to register a team-high and season-high tying 22 points against the Aggies. She knocked down five more threes (in eight attempts), and also converted a traditional three-point play with 1:49 remaining as she drove baseline for a layup and made the ensuing free throw on the foul. Meggs iced the game with two free throws with 40 seconds left.
The win over UC Davis secured the No. 4 seed in the Big West Tournament for UCI, and cemented the program’s top four finish for only the second time in the last 10 years.
Others nominated: Ariana Elegado (Cal Poly); Alex Thomas (Cal State Fullerton); Bernadette Fong (Cal State Northridge); Ella Clark (Long Beach State); Brittany Crain (UC Riverside); Melissa Zornig (UC Santa Barbara); Ashleigh Karaitiana (Hawai‘i)
