Matadors, 49ers Square Off In Battle Of Conference Unbeatens

2/20/2014

Tennis Weekly Release No. 6

Long Beach State (3-0) travels to Cal State Northridge (2-0) for a women's tennis showdown between conference unbeatens Friday.  The 49ers have won six straight matches overall, while the Matadors have won all four home contests they've played so far this season.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Men’s Tennis Co-Champs To Square Off
UC Irvine hosts Cal Poly Saturday in the Big West men’s tennis opener for both teams.  The two 2013 conference co-champions finished 5-1 in Big West play last year, with the Anteaters earning the No. 1 seed to the tournament by virtue of a 4-3 win on Cal Poly’s home court.  In 2014, both squads are off to a slow start.  Cal Poly is seeking its first win after an 0-7 start, although that includes a pair of heartbreaking 4-3 losses to Fresno State and Arizona.  UCI has opened the season at 2-7, but has been idle since Feb. 1.  The Anteaters enjoy a stretch in which eight of their next nine matches are at home.

Road Focused 49ers Face Cal State Northridge In Battle Of Conference Unbeatens
Long Beach State extended its winning streak to six straight contests following Saturday’s win versus UC Davis.  The 49ers also stretched their win streak at the Rhodes Tennis Center to 17 in a row.  They have not lost there since Mar. 20, 2012 against Nebraska.  They look forward to playing on their home courts for the entire month of March, spanning eight matches, and beginning on Mar. 1 against BYU.  However, LBSU first directs its attention to Friday’s conference showdown at Cal State Northridge.  The matchup features two Big West unbeatens as the 49ers enter at 3-0, while the Matadors are 2-0.

Titans Make It Close Against UC Irvine
Cal State Fullerton came up just a point short of handing UC Irvine its first loss in head-to-head meetings since 2001.  Instead, the Titans lost their 14th consecutive match to their Orange County cohort, falling 4-3.  UCI won the doubles point and three straight singles matches at the bottom of the ladder, but the Titans prevailed at the top three spots.  Freshman Alexis Valenzuela sported an impressive three-set triumph against UCI’s Marivick Mamiit, an all-conference second team selection in singles last year.  The match carried extra significance as former UCI assistant now turned CSF first-year head coach Dianne Matias took on Anteater mentor Mike Edles.  Matias played a key role in helping the Anteaters finish 23-5 overall in 2013.

UC Davis Men On Winning Streak
After an 0-4 start, the UC Davis men are on a roll with four straight victories, including one in its conference opener against UC Riverside.  The Aggies face a stiff test at No. 2 USC on Friday.

A Decade And More At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 11th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 24-27.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the nine time in the last 10 years, while the UC Santa Barbara men became the first No. 5 seed to earn the title.
