UC Irvine senior Camille Buckley (Ontario, Calif./Loyola Marymount) garnered Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades after averaging 19.0 points and 14.5 rebounds in back-to-back conference victories.
The 6-1 forward posted 15 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Anteaters past Long Beach State, 78-58. It was Buckley’s second consecutive 20+ rebound performance with 12 of those caroms coming on the offensive end. She also hit 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Buckley notched her 10th double-double of the season in the winning effort.
In a 79-73 win over UC Davis, Buckley topped the squad with 23 points and eight rebounds. She again was solid from the charity stripe, making 13 of 16 attempts. She added a pair of steals.
Buckley helped UCI win two in a row for the second time this season and back-to-back conference games for the first time since Feb. 21, 2013.
After shooting 84.6% (22 of 26) at the foul line over the two games, Buckley moved into 10th all-time at UCI for career free throws made (228). Her 136 made free throws this year ranks third on the UCI single-season list, and her 174 attempts are ninth.
Last week, Buckley corralled a program record 26 rebounds to break the previous mark that had stood for nearly 20 years.
Others nominated: Ariana Elegado (Cal Poly); Alex Thomas (Cal State Fullerton); Ashlee Guay (Cal State Northridge); Melissa Zornig (UC Santa Barbara); Shawna-Lei Kuehu (Hawai‘i)
