Long Beach State Looks To Extend Home Win Streak

Weekly Tennis Release No. 4

The Long Beach State women's tennis team has not lost at the Rhodes Tennis Center in nearly two years and hopes to extend a 15-match home court winning streak against Loyola Marymount and San Jose State this week.

Long Beach State Looks To Extend Home Streak
Long Beach State earned a 6-1 win against Cal State Fullerton last week to improve to 2-0 in the Big West and extend its winning streak at the Rhodes Tennis Center to 15 straight matches.  The 49ers have not lost a home match since Mar. 20, 2012 against Nebraska.  LBSU also has won 49 of its last 51 Big West regular season contests.  The No. 46-ranked 49ers continue a current five-match homestand against Loyola Marymount and San Jose State this weekend.

UC Irvine Women Tackle Fifth Straight Ranked Opponent
The UC Irvine women’s tennis team meets its fifth consecutive ranked foe to open the season when the Anteaters tangle with No. 48 San Diego State in a Thursday road matchup.  The Anteaters previously have played No. 30 TCU, No. 61 San Diego, No. 5 UCLA and No. 44 Pepperdine.  UCI defeated the Toreros, 4-1, on Jan. 25.

UC Santa Barbara Treks To The Northwest
In the midst of eight road matches in its next nine outings, the UC Santa Barbara women’s tennis team heads to the Northwest this weekend to square off versus Washington State and No. 41 Washington.  Head coach Simon Thibodeau’s troops battled to a pair of 4-3 results last week, edging past Loyola Marymount and falling to No. 61 San Diego.  Sophomore Luisa Ortiz Candido has won two straight matches in singles from the No. 6 position.

First Conference Match Takes Place In Men’s Tennis
The first of many men’s tennis conference matches to be contested in the next couple of months takes place this Saturday when UC Riverside travels to UC Davis.  Both programs enter the week looking to dent the win column.  The Highlanders (0-8) face Sacramento State on Friday.  UCR has been on the cusp of victory, compiling three points in a pair of matches.  The Aggies look to erase an 0-4 start against Sonoma State in what represents the first match of a doubleheader before their showdown with UCR.

Mustangs Look For First Win
The Cal Poly men’s tennis squad seeks its first win of the 2014 campaign following an uncharacteristic 0-6 start.  The Mustangs finished 14-9 last year and earned a share of the Big West regular season championship, but lost All-American Andre Dome to graduation.  Cal Poly hosts Arizona and No. 43 San Diego this week.

A Decade And More At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 11th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 24-27.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the nine time in the last 10 years, while the UC Santa Barbara men became the first No. 5 seed to earn the title.
