BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

GAUCHOS COME OUT AT 2-5 AFTER TOUGH OPENING WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Host UC Santa Barbara has already played five ranked opponents in its first weekend of play and recorded two wins in matches against unranked opponents, Cal Baptist and Claremont.  The Gauchos will return to the pool after a week of rest before heading to La Jolla for the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego beginning on Feb. 8.

ANTEATERS ARE UNDEFEATED IN 2014
After mounting a 6-0 run at the close of the 2013 season before dropping the Big West Tournament championship game to Hawai‘i, UC Irvine has kicked off its 2014 campaign in a similar fashion with an unblemished 4-0 record at the UCSB Winter Invite.  The No. 5 Anteaters finished 19-4 over Cal Baptist, 11-6 over No. 12 San Jose State, 22-1 over Cal State Monterey Bay and 9-6 over No. 5 Arizona State.  Irvine heads to Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational this weekend and looks to continue its best start since 2012 when the Anteaters went 8-1 through their first nine games.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Croghan Stellar In 4-0 Start For UC Irvine

Senior Hannah Croghan (Yorba Linda, Calif./Rosary HS) keyed a successful opener for UC Irvine’s 2014 season, earning Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week accolades with 10 goals in four victories at the UC Santa Barbara Invite.

Croghan saved her scoring prowess for two nationally ranked opponents in the tournament, notching a hat trick in an 11-6 victory over No. 8 San Jose State and burying four more goals in a 9-6 triumph against No. 4 Arizona State.  Croghan’s contributions helped UCI snap a six-match losing streak to the Sun Devils.  The attacker added another hat trick in the season-opening 19-4 win versus Cal Baptist.

She contributed in several other areas for the sixth-ranked Anteaters.  Croghan accumulated 11 steals and eight assists while earning four exclusions for the weekend.  Against the Sun Devils, she tallied two steals and two assists to go along with the four scores.  In the Cal Baptist game, Croghan collected three steals and three assists to accompany her hat trick.

Others nominated: Marisa Young (Cal State Northridge); Justine Morgan (Long Beach State); Carla Tocchini (UC Davis); Lauren Martin (UC Santa Barbara)
