Cal State Northridge junior Ashlee Guay (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) earned Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors thanks to multiple career-high efforts and an impressive shooting display.
Guay, a 5-7 guard, averaged 26.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in a 1-1 week for the Matadors, which lost 83-73 to UC Irvine and defeated Long Beach State, 77-54. She shot 51.5% (17 of 33) from the floor, including 54.2% (13 of 24) on three-pointers. Guay also sank a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Against the Anteaters, Guay contributed a career-high 32 points, in large part due to a school record eight three-pointers. She connected on 10-for-20 from the field while adding five rebounds and five assists.
Guay returned two lights later to post her second career double-double, a team-high 21-point, 10-rebound effort that spurred the 23 point win. The 10 boards represented a career-best effort. She knocked down seven of 13 shots, five of which came from long distance.
In addition, Guay crept closer to a pair of milestones. She needs nine points to reach 1,000 for her career and eight more assists to set a new program all-time record.
Others nominated: Jonae Ervin (Cal Poly); Alex Thomas (Cal State Fullerton); Camille Buckley (UC Irvine); Melissa Zornig (UC Santa Barbara); Kamilah Jackson (Hawai‘i)
