BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

AGGIES DROP SEASON OPENER TO CAL

UC Davis opened its season at 0-1 after a 14-9 decision against California on Saturday, Jan. 18.  The Aggies return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Sonoma State for a 3 pm showdown with the Seawolves.  This is the first season since the 2011 campaign that Davis suffered a loss in its first match of the season.  Looking to continue the trend, the Aggies have split their first two matches since 2009.

HATS OFF TO HAT TRICK HANNAH

Senior Hannah Curran recorded a hat trick for UC Davis in the Aggies’ first match of the season.  With only one Big West matchup in the first week of play, Curran leads her squad and the conference in goals scored.  Last season, the center recorded hat tricks on three occasions, including a six-goal effort in the Feb. 23 match against UC San Diego.  With 33 goals scored in 2013, Curran had the third-most goals scored in her junior season for Davis.

UCSB HOSTS WINTER INVITE
UC Santa Barbara hosts the UCSB Winter Invite beginning on Friday, Jan. 24 through Sunday Jan. 26.  The 18-team tournament field includes Big West representatives UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State and the Gauchos.

ALL BIG WEST RETURNERS
Five of UC Irvine’s six 2013 All Big West honorees return for the 2014 season, including two First Team selections in senior attacker, Hannah Croghan, and junior goalie Jillian Yocum.  UC Irvine, who returns the greatest number of honorees, received the highest ranking for a Big West team by the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Preseason Poll.  The Anteaters come in at No. 6 followed directly by Hawai‘i at No. 7.

BACK IN ACTION
UC Irvine‘s Jessy Cardey, Annika Bergesen and Danielle Warde redshirted the 2013 season and return to the water for their senior, senior and junior seasons, respectively.  Cardey holds her own in the Big West record books with the eighth-most goals scored in a single season with 74 in 2012 and the sixth-best goals per game with a 2.24 average recorded the same season.  The three upperclassmen will bring experience to a young Anteater squad.
