Senior Brandon Spearman (Chicago, Ill./Indian Hills CC) secured Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors as he led Hawai‘i to a 2-1 record at the prestigious Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic and captured all-tournament honors.
The 6-4 guard averaged 14.3 points per game in lifting UH to back-to-back wins against Saint Mary’s and Oregon State. He scored a season-high 17 points in a narrow 62-61 loss to Boise State in the tournament opener, making 6 of 9 shots overall, including 3 of 6 from three-point range.
In a 76-74 triumph over the Gaels, Spearman contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. In UH’s 79-73 win over Oregon State, the first meeting against a Pac-12 squad in seven years, Spearman notched 14 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. He also had a pair of assists and shot 5-for-10 from the field.
For the tournament, Spearman shot 53.6 (15-of-28) percent from the floor and 54.5 (6-for-11) from three-point territory. He helped UH to a 9-3 record overall, including wins in seven of the last eight games.
