Big West Women's Volleyball Release - Week 15

The NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee announced the 64-team field for the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship and the Big West Conference received three bids.   UC Santa Barbara is making its first NCAA appearance since 2009 after earning the conference’s automatic qualifier, while Hawai’i and Cal State Northridge are at-large selections. This marks the first time in three years the Big West Conference has received multiple bids and 2006 being the last time the league advanced three teams.

UC Santa Barbara, Hawai’i and Cal State Northridge were crowned Big West Conference tri-champions after posting a 13-3 record.  The Gauchos captured the automatic qualifier due to the head-to-head tiebreaker.


Thirty-two conferences were awarded automatic qualification, and the remaining 32 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket.The top-16 teams were seeded nationally and placed within four regions. The teams tabbed as the top four seeds were No. 1 Texas; No. 2 Penn State; No. 3 Washington; and No. 4 Missouri.

Claiming at least a share of the Big West title for the first time since 2005, the Gauchos (18-10) are headed to San Diego, Calif., for the first & second rounds, which is part of the Lincoln Regional.  For their first round matchup, the Gauchos drew host and West Coast Conference champion San Diego (24-3), who earned the ninth overall seed.  The two teams take to the court Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the second round to face the victor of WAC regular season and postseason champion New Mexico State (22-10) and PAC-12 at-large pick Arizona (20-12).   The Gauchos have made 24 appearances in the postseason during its time in the Big West, posting a record of 19-24 (.442).

Earning the 11th-seed in the tournament, the Rainbow Wahine (24-4) received the honor of hosting the first & second rounds at the Stan Sheriff Center as part of the Los Angeles Regional.  They are set to entertain West Coast Conference at-large selection BYU (22-6), PAC-12 at-large pick Arizona State (19-13) and Big Sky champion Idaho State (23-11).  Hawai’i is slated to battle the Bengals in the first round on Friday, Dec. 6 at 9:30 p.m. (PST), while the Cougars and Sun Devils square off in the earlier match.   The winner of each contest will face off Saturday evening for a chance to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in Los Angeles, Calif.

Also competing within the Los Angeles Regional is Cal State Northridge, who is making a quick trip to Los Angeles for the first and second rounds.  Joining the Matadors at the Galen Center are host and sixth-seed USC (26-5), Mountain West champion Colorado State (28-1) and America East champion New Hampshire (20-12).  Making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2004, the Matadors tackle the Rams in their tournament opener on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 5:00 p.m.  The winner takes on the victor of the USC-New Hampshire showdown Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:00 p.m. for a chance to battle the advancing team out of the Hawai’i qualifier. The Matadors are 0-2 in the postseason, falling to Loyola Marymount in 2003 and Kansas State in 2004.

This year’s Regional sites include Los Angeles, Calif.; Lexington, Ky.; Champaign, Ill. and Lincoln, Neb., with the finals taking place at the Key Arena in Seattle, Wash., December 19 & 21.
