Golf Teams Wrap Up Fall Season

Big West Golf Release - November

Fall Season Comes To Close:
While most of the women’s golf teams wrapped up their fall season in October, the men’s programs are squeezing in one more tournament in the month of November.  Long Beach State and UC Davis are slated to compete in former Big West foe Pacific’s annual Pacific Invitational that runs Oct. 31-Nov. 2.  The three-day event takes place at the 6,511-yard, par-71 Stockton Country Club.  The 12-team field also includes Army, BYU, Charlotte, Denver, Fresno State, Kansas State, Nevada, host Pacific, Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s.
The University of Hawai’i is also hosting a November tournament, the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, scheduled for Nov. 4-6.  Eighteen holes will be played each day at the Princeville Makai Golf Club at the St. Regis Princeville Resort, a 7,223 yard, par-72 course.  Big West teams participating in the event include host Hawai’i, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara.  They will be joined by Arizona State, Baylor, Boise State, East Tennessee State, Idaho, Louisville, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Pepperdine, San Diego, San Francisco and Utah.

Rainbow Wahine Play Final Tournament:
Hawai’i is the lone women’s golf team set to compete in a tournament this month.  The Rainbow Wahine are participating in the Pac-12 Preview in Kohala, Hawai’i, at the Nanea Golf Club (6,112 yards/par 73).  This elite event marks the first time the Nanea Golf Club will open its doors for a non-member tournament in club history.  The competition features 11 Pac-12 teams, seven of which are ranked in the Top 25.

Individual Honors:
Long Beach State sophomore Daniel Chian fired a tournament low 66 in the final round of the Bill Cullum Invitational to claim his first tournament win as a 49er.   He completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament carding a 10-under-par 206.

While Chian was the only male athlete to capture top honors last month, four women mastered the same feat.  Four birdies in Sunday’s final round of the Hoosier Fall Invitational elevated UC Davis’ Betty Chen to medalist honors by two shots.  Chen was 3-under 210 overall, winning by two strokes over Carmen Laguna of Minnesota.

Big West foes Cal Poly’s Taylor Yoshitake and Cal State Northridge’s Clariss Guce tied for tournament leader honors at the Wyoming Cowgirl Intercollegiate with a three-under-par 213.  In lieu of a playoff, the individual medalist honor was decided on a scorecard playoff and Guce’s bogey on the 15th hole awarded Yoshitake the playoff winner.

UC Riverside’s Brittani Ferraro claimed the individual title at the Birdies For Breast Cancer Tournament with a seven-under-par 209, beating out Western Kentucky’s Ellinor Haag by just one stroke. Ferraro is the first individual winner for the Highlanders since Amelia Ek won the Braveheart Classic in 2011.alt

Prosperous October:
Multiple Big West teams found success in the month of October as six programs collected team titles at their respective events.  Both Cal State Fullerton’s men’s and women’s program picked up a team victory last month.  The Titan men entered the final day of the Bill Cullum Invitational  11-strokes back in third place but were able to battle back to grab the team title with a 15-under-par 849.   The women ended the fall season on a high note, clinching first place at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 909, edging out host Cal State Northridge by one stroke.

Three other women’s team collected team titles - Cal Poly, UC Davis and UC Riverside.  Cal Poly women won their home event - Firestone Grill Invitational - with a two-day total of 608 total on the 5,996-yard, par-73 course.  The 41st-ranked Aggie women dominated the 16-team field of the Hoosier Fall Invitational with a 16-stroke win.  UC Davis posted a three-round score of 868.

The UC Riverside women’s golf team won the 10-team Birdies For Breast Cancer Tournament Tuesday with a final three-round score of 880 at Oak Quarry Golf Club. This is the first win for the team since the squad tied for the team lead at the Bronco Fall Invitational on October 13-14, 2008.

Earlier in October, UC Irvine men overcame a 13-shot deficit to win the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate at Cabo del Sol Golf Club in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico.  The Anteaters shot 290 to win the tournament with a 54-hole total of 882, one shot better than San Francisco (883).  The victory was UCI’s first tourney title in nearly 3 ½ years since winning the 2010 Big West Conference Championship.
