BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
Winner-Winner: In the second week of conference play, Cal Poly edged out both of its opponents by a single goal after shutting out Cal State Northridge 1-0 Thursday and netting an overtime goal against Hawai‘i for a 3-2 victory Sunday. In the first overtime affair this season, Elise Krieghoff netted the golden goal in the 105th minute on a pass from Kacey Held to secure the win on the road.
Krieghoff Is No. 1: After picking up her 16th goal versus UH, Elise Krieghoff has claimed the No. 1 spot in the Cal Poly record book for the most goals in a single season, edging out Kolleen Kassis who recorded 15 goals in 1992. Now with 27 goals scored in her career, Krieghoff ties for fourth among the Mustangs. The sophomore is now tied for second in the Big West record book with five career Player Of The Week recognitions and due to her efforts and this week’s recognition of Megan Abutin, Cal Poly stands at No. 5 for POTW honors in a single season with five. Krieghoff’s16 goals rank sixth in the Big West record book for most in a single season and her six game-winners rank fifth. Her game-winner total ranks second in the CP record book.
CAL STATE FULLERTON
Snapped: Cal State Fullerton dropped its lone game last weekend as UC Riverside snapped the Titans’ five-game undefeated streak in a 1-0 decision Sunday. Fullerton owns a 5-3 record this season in matches decided by a single goal.
Streak Talk: The last time the Titans went on a five-game unbeaten streak was in Sept. of 2011. Fullerton won four games in a row and tied the fifth match to make it five games before dropping a decision.
Clean Sheet: Although CSF has been blanked five times this season, Fullerton has recorded five shutouts of its own. In the last four seasons, the Titans have recorded 21 clean sheets, 11 coming in conference games.
Up Next: Playing its second weekend with just a single match, Fullerton will continue its two-game road trip as it takes on the Mustangs Friday. Fullerton’s all-time series record versus Cal Poly is 7-12-4.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE
Lost Footing: In a scoreless second weekend of conference play, Cal State Northridge fell to Cal Poly 1-0 Thursday and dropped its second match of the week 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara Sunday. This is the second weekend this season that the Matadors have been unable to find the net. The team hopes to rebound on the road with a Big West contest against UC Davis as CSUN looks to match its 2012 1-0 win over the Aggies. Northridge owns a 7-3 all-time advantage over UCD.
Slow Start: At 0-3-1 the Matadors have not gone winless in Big West play through 4 games since 2002. The 2002 squad finished with two conference wins, and three overall. Northridge is 21-12-4 in league the last five seasons.
Light At The End Of The Tunnel: With four games left in the regular season, CSUN’s remaining opponents were unsuccessful in defeating the Matadors last year. In 2012, Northridge collected wins in its matches versus UC Davis, Long Beach State, and Hawai‘i while it tied UC Irvine in a scoreless draw.
LONG BEACH STATE
All Tied Up: In its Big West home opener last weekend, Long Beach State battled UC Davis to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at George Allen Field Thursday -- the result marked the first tie for the 49ers this season.

Standout Performance: Sophomore Elizabeth Lyons recorded her second goal of the year against the Aggies to extend the Beach’s home unbeaten streak to five games. The 49ers have not dropped a decision on home turf since Aug. 23.
Friendly Crossfire: The Beach travels to long-time rival UC Irvine for a showdown of epic proportions Thursday. The two teams will battle for victory in the annual Black and Blue Series as the 49ers look to avenge a 1-0 double overtime loss to the Anteaters suffered in 2012.
Locked In League: In its conference opener, UC Davis finished 110 minutes of action deadlocked at a 1-1 draw after LBSU and the Aggies scored just 30 seconds apart from each other in the first half of regulation on Thursday. The match marked the third draw for Davis this season and both squad’s first tie in league play.
Home Opener On The Horizon: The Aggies dropped their second game in Big West play in a 3-1 decision to UC Irvine Sunday. The Aggies have matched their 2011 start to league play when they recorded a loss and a tie in the first week of Big West action. Davis returns home this week and looks to record its first conference win as it hosts Hawai‘i Thursday and Cal State Northridge Sunday.
The Jern Jive: Goalkeeper Taylor Jern recorded a total of 13 saves over the weekend, bringing her to 64 saves this season. Jern now ranks second in the Big West just behind Lindsey Maricic of Cal State Fullerton who leads the league with 73.
Powerhouse: UC Irvine went unbeaten last weekend as it recorded a 2-0 shutout win over UC Riverside Thursday and a 3-1 victory over UC Davis Sunday. That was the third weekend this season that the Anteaters walked away unbeaten. Irvine has now recorded three wins in a row and looks to continue that momentum as it hosts cross-town rival Long Beach State Thursday. The ’Eaters own the series advantage over the 49ers with an 11-7-3 all-time record.
Tobin Hanging Tough: Sophomore goalkeeper Corey Tobin appeared in goal again for UCI as she recorded her sixth game started and her second shutout of the season in the game versus UC Riverside. Offensive Onslaught: Five different Anteaters recorded goals in last weekend’s victories. The scorers included Natalia Ledezma, Bianca Frontino, Zuri Walker, Zoya Farzaneh and Jenna Pellegrino. Frontino and Walker recorded their first goals of 2013 in the 3-1 victory over UC Davis.
Splitter: UC Riverside split its games last weekend after falling to UC Irvine 2-0 Thursday and defeating Cal State Fullerton in a 1-0 decision Sunday. Sunday’s match marked the eighth time this season that a single goal would decide the outcome of the game.
Highlanders Keep Bringing The Heat: The Highlanders dropped their first game of league play last week after getting off to a solid 2-0 start, the best since 2005. Riverside quickly turned it around and after getting shutout, UCR clinched a 1-0 victory to improve to 3-1. Despite dropping its first Big West match this season, Riverside has matched its best start since 2011 with three wins its first four games.
Success From The Start: Riverside embarks on a two-game road trip for the third week of league play as the Highlanders face Big West foes UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly. A single win this weekend would represent the program’s best start since 2005 when the Highlanders went 4-0-1 in their first five conference games.
UC SANTA BARBARA
Game of Inches: For the eighth and ninth time this season, UC Santa Barbara’s outcome would be decided by a single goal. The Gauchos fell 1-0 to Hawai‘i Thursday and recorded a 1-0 victory over Cal State Northridge Sunday. Santa Barbara leads the league in the number of games decided by a single goal.
Ritter’s Raw Power: After logging her seventh shutout of the season, goalkeeper Beth Ritter is one clean sheet away from breaking into the UCSB record books. The goalkeeper is also tied with Irvine’s Corey Tobin for the fewest goals against (8) and stands alone atop the conference with a 0.65 goals-against average.
Late Bloomer: Santa Barbara’s Allie Ariniello entered her senior season without a goal scored in her collegiate career. Then, in the first three matches of 2013, the senior recorded three goals and most recently scored the game-winner in the 1-0 victory over Cal State Northridge. Ariniello is second on the team with goals scored (4) in 2013 just behind teammate Madison Beckley, who has five on the season.
Conference Split: On the heels of defeat, Hawai‘i came back strong to clinch its first conference victory in a 1-0 shutout win over UC Santa Barbara Thursday before falling to Cal Poly 3-2 in double overtime Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine take to the road as they face UC Davis and Long Beach State for a pair of league matchups.
Rainbows On The Road: The Rainbow Wahine look to record their first conference road win as a Big West participant after an inaugural 0-4-1 record away from the home pitch in 2012. This season, the Bows are 3-3 on the road so far, the best away record since the 2004 season when Hawai‘i finished 4-4-1 as the visitors.
Standouts: At UH’s Big West home opener last weekend, late-game heroics from junior forward Tiana Fujimoto clinched the victory. The forward ranks second behind Cal Poly’s Elise Krieghoff in goals scored with eight to Krieghoff’s 16 and in points with sixteen to Krieghoff’s 35. Redshirt freshman keeper Erica Young made her third start of the season and picked up three saves while recording her first shutout win.
