This Week in the Big West - September 9-15, 2013

Eight of the nine Big West cross country clubs will be in action this weekend, two of which will be hosting their first meets of the 2013 season.

On the mainland, UC Riverside welcomes teams to the Inland Empire for the UCR Invitational. The 33rd running of the event sees fellow league members Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara among the participating clubs. There will be a 5K women’s collegiate race as well as an 8K men’s race. The Highlanders are anxious to compete in live action as its season-opening competition in Nevada on August 30 was canceled due to poor air quality.

Several conference clubs will also head to Fresno State University Saturday for the Fresno Invitational. Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis will be a part of a competitive field in a four-mile men’s race and a 5K women’s jaunt. Meanwhile, Long Beach State makes the short trip north to Malibu for the Pepperdine Invitational.

Out on the islands, Hawai’i hosts its first meet of the season in the Big Wave Invitational. The 13th edition of the event will once again be held at Kane’ohe Klipper Golf Course on the Marines Corps Base Hawai’i. The meet features a 5K on both sides of the ledger with the women scheduled to go first.

• Last weekend the UC Irvine squads competed in their season-opening meet, the adidas/UCI Invitational at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields. The men raced to a second place finish in the eight-team field. The Anteaters had two top-10 finishers in Riley Martin (2nd - 25:28.1) and Alex Tebbe (6th - 25:45.0) in the 8K run. The UCI women finished up in fourth place when it was all said and done in the 5K, led by Kaycee Holcomb (6th - 18:39.9) and Carlotta Pham (7th - 18:41.8).

• Hawai’i’s Wahine also had a solid run at their season-opener, the Chaminade Invitational. UH finished fourth in the 5K race, led by Kevyn Murphy (11th - 20:03) and Louise Mulvey (19th - 20:50).

• After five consecutive seasons, Big West Cross Country Championships will move from Riverside to San Luis Obispo. Fairbanks Cross Country Course will host the championship meet, the same site that hosted the event back in 2007. During that championship, the Cal Poly men won their fifth straight title thanks to a clean sweep of the first five positions. UC Santa Barbara took the women’s title, its fourth in five seasons.
