Big West At A Glance
• For the second straight year the defending Big West Men’s Golf Co-Champion Cal State Fullerton has the honor of kicking off the new year as it heads north for the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., set for Sept. 9-10.  Last year the Titans finished fourth in the 11-team field with senior Dakota Duerr leading the way with a four-over-par 220, good enough for fourth place.

• The UC Riverside men’s team and the Cal Poly men’s and women’s teams are slated to host golf events in the month of September.  The Highlanders host the Riverside Mission Cup, a 36-hole, one-day event, on Sept. 17.  The Mustangs’ annual Firestone Grill Invitational tournament takes place at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo, Calif., Sept. 21-22.  Cal Poly captured both the men’s and women’s team titles in 2012.

Spearheaded by the second-best, four-person 18-hole total in program history in the final round, the men’s team grabbed the team title over Cal State Fullerton by four strokes. The women claimed the team title last year after a stellar performance led by freshman Drew Thomas.   The diaper dandy carded rounds of 74, 73 and 74 in her first collegiate event, missing the school record by one stroke with her 221 total, to guide the Mustangs to a 10-stroke victory in the 54-hole event.

• Over the summer break Cal State Northridge Director of Athletics Dr. Brandon E. Martin announced the hiring of Gina Umeck as the head women’s golf coach for the Matadors.  The Redlands, Calif., native played at UCLA, where her Bruin team won the NCAA Championship in 2004. She went on to play professionally for five years on the LPGA Symetra Tour and qualified for the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open at Interlochen C.C. in Edina, Minn.

While at the University of Albany, Umeck began with a squad of four players but recruited five new domestic and international players for the fall of 2013. Her recruiting class included a national top NJCAA player in Victoria Choi. Prior to Albany, Umeck spent two seasons (2010-11, 2011-12) as the head coach at Barry University in Miami, Fla. She led Barry to the 2012 NCAA Division II national championships where the Buccaneers finished fourth. It was the schools first appearance in the national championships since 2002.
