13 BB Release - Week 12

4/30/2013

alt
• As we approach the final month of the 2013 baseball regular season, the battle for the conference crown has heated up.  No. 3 Cal State Fullerton is first with a 12-3 record, Cal State Northridge is second at 11-4 and No. 19 UC Irvine rounds out the top three.  Long Beach State is three games back with a 9-6 mark while Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara are tied for fifth at 8-7.

• The Dirtbags have won four of the last five games, including a 2-1 series win over nationally-ranked Cal Poly.  Long Beach State tackles its second-straight Big West ranked opponent when it visits Goodwin Field May 3-5 to battle third-ranked Cal State Fullerton.

• Big West baseball will be broadcasted to fans across the country this week as Saturday’s contest between Long Beach State and No. 3 Cal State Fullerton is set to air on ESPNU.  First pitch at Goodwin Field is slated for 8:00 p.m.  Later in the month, the Titans will appear on the small screen again when they host No. 19 UC Irvine on May 17-18.  ESPNU is slated to broadcast Friday’s showdown at 8:00 p.m. and Fox Sports West has selected Saturday’s contest which airs at 6:00 p.m.

• Titan Thomas Eshelman ranks 22nd in the nation with a 1.41 ERA and is fifth among freshman.  In 76.2 innings pitched, Eshelman has struck out 50 and has allowed just one walk.

• Cal State Fullerton’s Justin Garza and UC Irvine’s Andrew Morales each own nine victories, ranking fifth in the country.

• Fifty-one players have been named to the mid-season watch list for the ninth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, and the Big West Conference landed three players on the elite list.  Cal State Fullerton’s Michael Lorenzen (13), Cal Poly’s Reed Reilly (11) and UC Riverside’s Trevor Frank (9) represent the league.  Lorenzen is also one of 25 players represented on the 2013 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award watch list.

• Cal State Fullerton’s Carlos Lopez is one of 10 finalist for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball, as chosen by a media committee.    To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA DI senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.  Fans can vote for Lopez at www.seniorclassaward.com.  Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.  The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA College World Series® in Omaha June 15-26.

• Big West.TV brings together live and on-demand video from each of the Big West’s member institutions.  Now in its eighth year, BigWest.TV covers Big West sports, press conferences, interviews and features, including every home and conference contest in women’s volleyball as well as men’s and women’s basketball.  Also covered are select contests in men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball and Big West Championships.
