No. 1 UC Irvine, No. 2 Long Beach State and No. 3 UC Santa Barbara won their matches during Big West Women's Tennis Championship quarterfinal action at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.  The 49ers and Gauchos are set to meet in the semifinals for the second straight year.

Top-seeded UC Irvine delivered a 4-0 win against No. 8 seed Pacific to start out Big West Women's Tennis Championship semifinal action Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Anteaters won convincingly in doubles and singles to extend their winning streak to 19 straight matches and improve to 21-3 on the year.  UCI, ranked 31st in the country, advanced to the semifinal round for the 12th straight year.

Doubles play featured wins at No. 2 for the 'Eaters, as Ali Facey and Brooke Schweyer blanked Susan Te and Gergana Boncheva, 8-0 at No. 2.  Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Stadfelt won 8-2 at No. 3 to clinch the point.

In singles, UCI won three matches in straight sets to seal the victory.

At No. 4, Sarah Gong posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Boncheva and Franziska Goettsching earned a 6-2, 6-2 win against Christiana Ferrari at No. 3.  With Pacific battling strong at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5, having won a set at each position, the Anteaters squelched any suspense with Stadfelt's presence at No. 6.

Stadfelt captured a 6-1, 6-4 win against Regina Suarez to end the match. 

Pacific's season ended at 10-13.

Long Beach State Triumphs In Quarterfinal Match

No. 2 seed Long Beach State breezed to a 4-0 victory against No. 7 seed UC Davis as Big West Women's Tennis Championship quarterfinal action continued Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The 49ers moved on to the semifinals for the 13th consecutive year.  They will face third-seeded UC Santa Barbara, a 4-1 winner over Cal State Northridge, in one semifinal Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

The Aggies saw their season end at 11-13.

LBSU battled for the doubles point and the 1-0 lead in the match.  The 49ers won at the No. 1 draw and clinched the point when Klaudia Malenovska and Sarah Cantlay defeated Ellie Edles and Tiffany Pham, 8-6, at No. 2.

The 49ers dominated at the top of the ladder with three straight set wins.  Klaudia Malenovska was victorious at No. 2 in a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Layla Sanders.  Cantlay followed with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 against Edles.  The match concluded at No. 1 where Ebba Unden downed Megan Heneghan 6-2, 6-3.

LBSU improved to 19-3 and won its 11th straight contest.  The 45th-ranked 49ers continue their quest to win a ninth Big West Tournament title in the last 10 years.

UC Santa Barbara Forges Semifinal Rematchalt

No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara lost the doubles point, but stormed back in singles to prevail 4-1 over No. 6 seed Cal State Northridge in the quarterfinals of the Big West Women's Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.

The Gauchos set up a meeting with Long Beach State in the semifinals for the second straight year.  LBSU was a 4-1 victor last year.

However, the Matadors did not make matters easy for the Gauchos with a hotly contested doubles point.  CSUN won 8-2 at the No. 1 draw and UCSB responded with an 8-4 win at No. 3.  The Matador No. 2 tandem of Maria Pistalu and Lorraine Cheung knocked off Erica Cano and Priscila Garcia, 8-6, for the 1-0 advantage.

The Gauchos shook off the deficit and regained the lead with wins at No. 5 and No. 3 singles.  Stacy Yam defeated Jessica Warren 6-4, 6-1 and Paula Cos downed Sabrina Man-Son-Hing 6-0, 6-2 to give the Gauchos a 2-1 edge. 

UCSB continued to press at No. 6 with Cano taking down Alexis Marquez by a 6-2, 7-6 (2) score.  In an intense, back-and-forth affair, April Scatliffe squeezed past Pistalu with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 1.

UCSB bettered its overall record to 15-8 while CSUN finished the season 10-11.

Hawai’i Defeats Cal State Fullerton In Tight 4-1 Affair

No. 4 seed Hawai’i won a hard fought 4-1 match over Cal State Fullerton to conclude Big West Women's Tennis Championship semifinal action at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.

The Rainbow Wahine went the distance to grab the doubles point.  After winning at No. 1, Cal State Fullerton rebounded to win in the No. 3 draw.  UH's Martina Kostalova and Rebecca Faltusz cemented the point when they defeated Morgan McIntosh and Kalika Slevcove, 8-4, at the No. 2 slot.

UH extended its lead to 2-0 as Kostalova breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Slevcove at No. 3.  The Titans got on the board with a win at No. 1, riding the play of senior Tiffany Mai and her 6-2, 6-2 victory versus Xenia Suworowa.

At No. 6, Faltusz gave the Rainbow Wahine a 3-1 edge as she beat Rebekah Ermac 6-2, 6-3.

The match ended at No. 5 where Daguio won a three-set battle against Megan Sandford – 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. 

The Titans challenged the Rainbow Wahine at the two positions with unfinished matches.  Katarina Poljakova was up one set and led 5-4 in the second against CSF's Morgan McIntosh.  Paulina Petriskova and Monica Rodriguez were even at a set apiece with Rodriguez leading 3-0 in the third.

UH improved to 6-14 on the year and advanced to Saturday's semifinals at 9:00 a.m. against top-seeded UC Irvine.  The Titans finished their season at 11-14.
