BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

UC Irvine Hosts 19th Annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational:
UC Irvine hosts the 19th annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational this weekend at Anteater Stadium.  In addition to the Anteaters, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State and UC Riverside are participating in the meet which honors the three-time Olympian and six-time All-American at UCI.  Scott has run 136 sub-4 minute miles in his career and is now head coach at Cal State San Marcos, which will send several athletes to the meet.alt

Final Tuneups Take Place Before Big West Championships: Several teams are getting in one more week of work before turning their attention to the Big West Track and Field Championships.  Long Beach State is sending a group of throwers to the Triton Invitational while 47 athletes are entered in UCI’s Steve Scott Invitational.  The 49er men’s throwers have had a stellar season as three individuals – Adam Bianchessi (javelin), Jason Harrell (discus) and Joel Baez (hammer) all lead the Big West in their respective events.  Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara will face each other in a dual meet in San Luis Obispo, while UC Davis hosts non-conference rival Sacramento State for the Causeway Classic Dual.  The Aggies and Hornets partake in a scored meet that serves as preparation for the conference championships.  In addition, UCD will send top distance runners Alycia Cridebring and Sarah Sumpter to compete in the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford.  Cridebring will run in the 5,000 and Sumpter the 10,000.  The Hawai’i women host the Sunrise Meet #5 as its final source of prep work for the Big West championship meet.

Big West Athletes Post National Marks:  Six men and five women have posted marks that rank in the top 25 nationally.  Samantha Balentine of Hawai’i boasts a No. 8 national ranking in the high jump with a mark of 6-0.5 on April 11 at the Sacramento State Mondo Mid-Major Challenge.  She is the highest nationally ranked Big West athlete among the men or women.  Teammate Amanda Alvarez ranks No. 9 in the triple jump with her leap of 42-9.5 on March 29 at the Stanford Invitational.  UC Davis runner Lauren Wallace is No. 10 in the 800m with a time of 2:04.89 that she achieved at the Sun Angel Classic on April 5.  Cal Poly senior John Prader is the highest ranked Big West men’s athlete with his mark of 18-0.5 in the pole vault at the Cal Poly/ShareSlo.com Invite on Mar. 15.  UC Santa Barbara senior Mitch Haag is No. 12 nationally in the high jump after he cleared 7-2.5 on Mar. 29 at the Cal-Nevada Championships.  UC Riverside senior Travis Smith is also No. 12 in the nation, throwing 61-8.25 in the shot put at the Sun Angel Classic on Apr. 5.

Recapping The 2012 Big West Championships:  The UC Davis women and UC Santa Barbara men captured the first team titles in their program histories to highlight action at the 2012 Big West Track and Field Championships.  The Aggies won by just one-half point over runner-up UC Santa Barbara – 170-169.50 – helped by first place finishes in the 100m and 200m by Melanise Chapman.  Sarah Sumpter also helped UCD with her second meet record at the championships, running a 16:35.07 in the 5,000 meters and erasing the old mark of 16:38.19 held by Beth McGrann in 1989.

UC Santa Barbara outdistanced runner-up Long Beach State by 29 points to capture the men’s title.  The marquee event involved the Gauchos as Ryan Martin lined up against rival Charles Jock of UC Irvine in the 800 meters.  Jock won by a narrow two one-hundredths of a second at the finish line in a memorable race by two of the top runners in the country.

Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Northridge:
